BEH Weekly Family Message
January 6th, 2025
Weekly Recap
Summary of the Week:
We closed out 2024 at BEH in true BEH busy fashion. Our last day of school before the break, we had some of our Portland police and firefighters join us to treat the students to a pizza party, fire truck tour, and recess games. It was amazing to see how much fun the students and adults had at this event.
Following this, on the Saturday after school was out, our PTA collaborated with one of our local churches to put on a community event in our gym for families in need of holiday support. It was great to see the continued collaboration that makes our BEH community such a supportive and positive community to be a part of.
This week we are coming back to school and working to get students back in the rhythm of school. We will be focused on reestablishing our school wide expectations and working to embody our core values of Community, Integrity, and Perseverance. We could really use your help as we get started in 2025, we need your students here on time everyday. Our attendance has been slipping this year and we want to bring it back up, please help to get your students here everyday on time and here until the end of the school day. We have a lot of days off throughout the year, please, whenever possible work to schedule any appointments on those days or after 2:30 so that we can make the most of the time that we have together.
Your students are the most amazing students in Portland and we want to work with them to ensure that they reach their potential before they leave us for 6th grade.

What to Watch for This Week:
First Day of SUN School:
Today is the first day of SUN School for the term. If your child is enrolled in SUN for this term, you would have already gotten communication from Ms. Ali. If they are enrolled, this means that they will be at SUN school from the end of the school day (2:30) until 5:00. SUN runs Monday-Thursday until March 6th.
Girl Scouts Opening:
This term our SUN school is offering Girl Scouts for our interested students. The 4th/5th grade group is meeting on Mondays & Wednesdays and the 2nd/3rd grade group Tuesdays/Thursdays from 2:30-5:00. There is still space in both of these classes. If you have a student that is interested in joining, email Ms. Ali at alshawndam@selfenhancement.org
Home/School Communication Folders:
All teachers at BEH send home folders in student backpacks on Tuesdays. In those folders you will find weekly newsletters/updates on what is happening in the classroom, graded work from your student, field trip permission slips, and any other announcements or work to be shared with you. Please make sure to check your child's backpack every week on Tuesdays to learn what your student has been working on. This is also a good place to send notes or papers back to teachers when needed.
2nd Grade Swimming:
Our 2nd grade starts our weekly swim lessons next week. If you have a second grader, please make sure you have communicated with their teacher around permission slips and supplies needed before swim lessons begin. This is such an amazing opportunity for our students and one that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.
Looking to the Weeks Ahead:
Student Clubs:
Our new Student Council would like to work on adding weekly clubs to BEH and are interested in learning skills such as a second language, sports, photography, yearbook, etc. If you or a family member have a specific skill and some consistent weekly time that you could help teach/run a club, please let me know what club you would be interested in facilitating and if there is a regular day that could work right after school. If you have ideas or other thoughts around this, please share it with us. We would love to support our students' interests and provide some additional enrichment for them to learn some new skills after school moving forward.
Jefferson Baseball Camp:
Our BEH 5th graders are invited to a Baseball Camp at Jefferson High School on Saturday, January 18th, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.
Clarence Richmond, the Head Baseball Coach at Jefferson High School, would like to contribute to building the skills of any BEH students considering playing baseball for the Jefferson cluster in middle school and wants to help them to be ready for the summer of 2025.
Here is a flyer to learn more and register.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at geraldbolden@yahoo.com, or Clarence Richmond at crichmond@pps.net
