Update on Athletic Conference Considerations
Dear Families,
We hope this email finds you well. We wanted to update you on recent discussions and decisions regarding our school district's athletic conference participation.
The District has been exploring options regarding which athletic conference we should be a part of. Currently, we are members of the Inter-County Conference (ICC). However, we have been evaluating the possibility of joining the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference (LHAC).
Throughout this process, we have thoroughly examined various factors and consulted with all coaches involved. In November, we held meetings to discuss the potential move with our coaching staff to gather insights and perspectives. Like anything else in today’s society, there are a variety of perspectives on the topic.
The primary reasons driving our consideration for a change were concerns regarding our athletic travel budget, the frequency of game cancellations, and the impact these cancellations have on our programs. Most importantly, we are deeply concerned about the significant travel time our students endure, often spending hours on a bus on school nights, only to return and attend classes the next day.
After careful deliberation, we will not be able to join the LHAC at this time. One of the key factors influencing this decision is the inability of other schools to join us, which would have ensured an even number of teams in the conference. The league expressed concerns that an imbalance in team numbers could lead to scheduling difficulties.
We want to express our sincere appreciation to the leadership of the LHAC for their support and understanding throughout this process. It's evident that they are committed to the success of all member schools.
Please know that the Board of Directors takes these decisions seriously and recognizes the various emotions they may evoke. Our overarching goal is to support and grow our athletic programs while ensuring the best possible experience for our students. This includes all programs.
Therefore, we have resolved to remain in the ICC for the next three years. We have been in good discussions with the ICC leadership and are likewise committed to actively collaborating with the ICC to strengthen the conference and address any scheduling concerns to the best of our ability. We appreciate the efforts of the ICC throughout this process.
We understand the importance of transparency, which is why we wanted to inform you of our decision once it was finalized. Rest assured, we remain dedicated to supporting our students and fostering the growth of our athletic programs.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community.
Warm regards,
Mr. Michael J. Vuckovich
Superintendent of Schools
