Regulation Practices
Clap, Lap, Clap, Miss
Clap, Lap, Clap, Miss - While sitting, clap both hands once. Then hit your lap with both hands. Clap once more and then miss a clap (for the miss move your hands like you are going to high five the person to your LEFT and your RIGHT). Repeat for 30 seconds and see how fast you can go. HINT: Try as a class to say the motions out loud together while going through the actions.
A focused attention strategy helps regulate emotions and thoughts by encouraging concentration on a specific object, thought, or task, reducing mental distractions. This enhances mindfulness and cognitive control, leading to calmer emotional responses and better decision-making. By improving self-awareness, focused attention also reduces rumination, making it easier to manage stress and emotional reactivity.
To try out previous week's regulation strategies, check out the Regulation Strategies page on our school website.
Indigenous November newsletter
Inuit Knowledge Holder Goota
On Tuesday, November 19th students enjoyed a presentation by Goota, an Inuit knowledge holder. Goota passionately shared her culture through storytelling and presented a variety of Inuit artifacts. We loved having her at Lakeland Ridge School!
Dallas Arcand Jr. is an accomplished hoop dancer and has performed at the Calgary Stampede and has his own Ted Talk. On Friday, November 22nd, students learned how to hoop dance and attended a school wide assembly. They learned from Dallas throughout the day during their physical education classes. It was impressive to see Dallas perform!

Attendance Matters!
Children's attendance at school is incredibly important and can impact their future academic success, even starting in Kindergarten. Missing just 2 days each month equates to an entire month of school by the end of the year (10%). Some absences are unavoidable, such as absences due to illness and specialist appointments, however, many absences can be prevented if we stress the importance of attending all classes as a school community.
Chronic absenteeism has been proven to be a factor in lower academic achievement as well as increasing drop out rates.
Lakeland Ridge Attendance Statistics (end of October):
- Students with over 10% absenteeism:
- Elementary: 6.5%
- Junior High: 8.7%
- Overall: 7.5%
- Students with over 20% absenteeism:
- Elementary: 1.5%
- Junior High: 4.0%
- Overall: 2.9%
