Tissues needed!
We are down to our LAST box of tissues. LOTS of runny/congested noses this winter! Please send in an extra box of tissues at your earliest convenience. We appreciate you!
Secret Learner
This week, Ms. Kramer implemented a Secret Learner for our lessons. Each learning part of our day (math, phonics, writing, reading workshop, interactive read aloud) we choose a Secret Learner to watch throughout the lesson. If that student does their job, shows expected behavior, etc. throughout the lesson, we reveal them to the class and they earn a smelly sticker. If the Secret Learner does not show expected behavior or do their job, we do not reveal them. We have had lots of Secret Learner revealed this week already!
A Peek at our Week
Writing: This week, writers learned that they can use the Table of Contents of their books to help them plan the facts they want to teach. They need to keep chapter titles short so they can use those titles as headings for their chapters. We are also working on making sure our facts begin with a capital letter and end with punctuation. Students are working to highlight their capital at the start of their sentence with a yellow highlighter and their punctuation at the end of their sentence with a blue highlighter.
Math: This week, finished working with nonstandard measurement and we switched gears in Module 3 to data collection and graphing. Students learned that we can collect data in different ways, organize the data on a chart of a graph, then interpret the data (what can we learn from this graph?). We collected data on a variety of topics this week...favorite read aloud book, favorite fruit, favorite thing to make in the snow, etc. Next week students will go around to their classmates and ask them for their vote, organize the votes using tally marks, then color a bar graph to show the outcome of the votes. We will then answer questions about the information...Which got the most votes? Which got the fewest votes? How many more votes did this one get than that one? How many people voted for this and this? How many people were asked for their vote on this graph? Next week, we will wrap up Module 3 and student will take the Module 3 assessment at the end of the week.
Word Study: This week, we worked with long i words and what happens when a word has a "Momma e" at the end. We worked with words such as bike, mine, spike, kite, swipe, etc. Next week, we will work with long u with a silent e.
Practicing our measuring skills!
Science Fun!
We have been learning sounds and how we hear sounds through vibrations. This week, we learned about how our eardrum works to allow us to hear sounds. Students practiced seeing "eardrum" vibrations using a turning fork, cup, plastic wrap, and rice!
Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day will be here before we know it! Students will be exchanging Valentines with their classmates. They can create a mailbox at home to hold their Valentines. Details are below! Please make sure your child includes a Valentine for every student to avoid hurt feelings. No edible items on Valentines can be included. Please have your child choose Valentines that do NOT include candy attachments. Please make sure valentines and mailboxes are here a the start of the day on February 14 (You can also send them in early!) Thank you!
