2024 Native American Heritage Month Contests
DUE November 12th—-Florida Students Invited to Participate in 2024 Native American Heritage Month Contests
All Florida students are invited to participate in academic and creative contests based on this year’s theme. Students in grades K-3 are invited to participate in an art contest, while students in grades 4-12 are invited to participate in an essay contest. Additionally, students, parents, teachers and principals are invited to nominate full-time educators of all student grades for the Native American Heritage Month Excellence in Education Award.
About the Student Art Contest
The Native American Heritage Month art contest is open to all Kindergarten through third-grade students in Florida. Each student will submit original, two-dimensional artwork based on this year’s theme. Four statewide winners will be selected, and each winner will receive a $100 gift card for school supplies and a 1-year pass to Florida State Parks.
About the Student Essay Contest
The Native American Heritage Month essay contest is open to all students attending any Florida school in grades 4-12. Six winners will be selected: two elementary school students (grades 4-5), two middle school students (grades 6-8), and two high school students (grades 9-12). Each winner will receive a 2-year Florida College Plan scholarship provided by the Florida Prepaid College Foundation and a $100 gift card for school supplies.
Contestants must be Florida residents, attend school in Florida in grades 4-12 (including public, charter, private, home or virtual) and able to provide a Social Security Number. Each student may enter only one essay, written in English, no longer than 500 words.
There are many examples throughout our state’s history of Native Americans and their contributions to Florida’s success. Using your own words, write about a Native American who has had an impactful effect whose story should be shared. The subject of the essay should be a Floridian.
Some examples are:
- Betty Mae Tiger Jumper – First woman elected as Chair of the Seminole Tribe of Florida
- Florida’s Timucuan Pocahontas, Ulele
- Osceola (Billy Powell) – An advocate for Seminole rights in the 1800s
- Noah Billie – An acclaimed Seminole painter
- Billy Bowlegs III – a historian who helped introduce Americans to the Seminole tribe in the 20th century
About the Excellence in Education Award
Governor Ron DeSantis and First Lady Casey DeSantis’ Native American Heritage Month Excellence in Education Award Contest is open to all full-time educators in an elementary, middle, or high school in Florida. FCLE Signups
The Florida Civic Literacy Exam (FCLE) is a computer-based assessment that measures students’ civic literacy knowledge. In 2021, legislation was passed that requires all students enrolled in a U.S. Government course in high school to take the assessment (see s. 1003.4282(3)(d), F.S.).
All Semester 1 government students will be registered for the FCLE automatically, but 12th grade students can register using this machform. Students planning to earn a college degree from the Florida University system need to pass this test to earn their diploma.

TESTING ATTENDANCE
Please note that school-wide attendance is an automated procedure. Please do not call CCHS if your child is testing. The office staff is unable to call the testing rooms in order to maintain test security and to allow our proctors to monitor students. Attendance for most tests will be rectified within the next 24 hours. If after that time, your child's attendance has not updated, please feel free to contact our office staff with any concerns.
CLT Score Reporting
CLT at home scores are not automatically added for CCHS students. If you child took CLT at home, please send score reports to ktitus@pasco.k12.fl.us so they may be uploaded to mystudent and we can remove students from testing rosters.
Accessing Student Scores
Here's how to access your student's scores. In addition to specific course requirements, students must take and pass and algebra and ELA test in order to receive a diploma in the State of Florida. The tests allowed for each of these requirements is shown in the graphic below. If your student takes the CLT, please provide those score reports to ktitus@pasco.k12.fl.us to have them uploaded to mystudent.
Viewing Student Results
Once your child has tested, you can access the results through the Pasco Parent Portal. Go to http://www.pasco.k12.fl.us/parents and scroll down to the School/Classroom Resources section and select myStudent. From this page, you can log in or create an account. If you try to go directly to the Florida Department of Education Family Portal, it will ask for an access code. These codes are already uploaded into the Pasco Parent Portal so that you may have a seamless transition between the two portals. You do not need the access code.
To access basic information, click on your child’s picture/first name on the left-hand side of the screen. Then choose Test History. A list of the tests that your child has taken will appear. To view the results of a test, click on the light gray arrow to the right of the name of the test. Basic testing information will appear.
To access additional information from the state portal, click on the Portal icon in the top left-hand corner. Then click on the Florida Statewide Assessments icon that appears to the right of the Reports tab. Scores will be reported in the state Family Portal within 24 hours from the time the assessment was completed. Additional information, such as a simple Individual Student Report including a longitudinal chart, will be available in the Family Portal shortly after the test is taken.
Interpreting Your Child's Results
When you log into the Florida Statewide Assessments portal and access your child's results, you will notice that there are three icons in the top right-hand corner; Glossary, Guide, and Resources. Click on the Guide icon. You will find a resource that will take you step-by-step through your child's report. Remember that since this is new, not all of the information may be loaded into the state's system yet. Information explaining your child's test results can be found by clicking below:
