BCHS Jag PRIDE Newsletter
October 2024
Congratulations, BC! We have straight "A"s in 2024!
BCHS Families,
I am so incredibly proud to share that BCHS has once again earned an A-rating by the Arizona Department of Education for 2024! BCHS has been an A-rated school since 2019 based on student proficiency on the ACT (state assessment), student growth, college & career readiness, and graduation rate. We are so grateful for our hard-working, dedicated teachers that collaborate and focus on growing our students. And we are grateful for our students' grit, tenacity, and dedication to their learning! Congratulations, BC! This is truly an accomplishment as this is the first year that BCHS is not only an A-rated school, but also an A+ School of Excellence! Congrats on the straight "A"s, BC!
On top of our A-rating our two Arizona Teacher of the Year Finalists, Mr. Donovan and Mr. Burnton, were recognized at the Arizona Educational Foundation Gala on October 19th! We are so proud to share that Mr. Burton was named the 2025 Arizona State Teacher of the Year! Mr. Burnton will continue on as Arizona's National Teacher of the Year representative! Mr. Burnton is currently doing many media appearances, and will get some incredible travel experiences to the White House, Google, and Space Camp! This is truly an amazing accomplishment! Congratulations! Mr. Donovan is also recognized in 2025 as being an Ambassador of Excellence for AEF and will continue to represent education in speaking engagements and other opportunities this year! We are so grateful and proud of our two incredible Jaguar teachers and can't wait to see the amazing things they do as they represent education, BCHS, and DVUSD throughout Arizona and the Nation!
And I want to remind everyone that Election Day is almost here! DVUSD has two measures on the ballot that are so important for our community to understand. Please be sure to check out https://www.dvusd.org/election regarding facts about the M&O Override and Bond election questions. The most important part of the election is to get to the polls and VOTE!

Mamma Mia! Homecoming 2024 was Incredible!
Homecoming 2024 was such an amazing week of Jag spirit & PRIDE! Showcasing the theme of Mamma Mia, our student government decorated the halls and had dress up days celebrating Greek life, vacationing, wedding white, duo day, and class colors! Students and staff dressed up to show their spirit!
Friday was day we were all waiting for-- our annual parade, assembly, Homecoming Varsity Football game, and the royalty announcements. We had a great surprise at our assembly as Blue Bell Ice Cream honored our Arizona Teacher of the Year, Mr. Burnton, and Arizona Ambassador of Excellence, Mr. Donovan, with a cooler filled with their favorite ice cream flavors. And then Blue Bell surprised all of our Jags with ice cream for EVERYONE! It hit the spot after a warm assembly morning! Thank you, Blue Bell, for recognizing our amazing teachers and our school!
Friday night was so much fun with a fantastic Homecoming Jaguar Varsity Football win over Valley Vista! Half time was incredible, showcasing pom, cheer, Marching Band, and royalty! The weekend ended with our Mamma Mia Homecoming Dance outdoors at BCHS! It was a week of fun and memories!
A huge thank you goes out to our Student Government for making this week possible! We are grateful for your hard work and dedication!

We can do this Jags!
Attendance Office Tip
If your student is marked absent accidently by a teacher, please contact the teacher or have your student pick up an attendance change slip at the Attendance Desk. The teacher needs to verify and sign off to make the correction to fix your student's attendance.
Reception Desk Tip
We are happy to assist our parent and guardians at our reception desk in the front office; however, please remember parents/guardians must show proper photo identification so we can verify who we are speaking to or releasing students to for student safety and security. We so appreciate your understanding and support!

BC Choirs are having an Incredible Fall!
This October has been an extraordinary month for Boulder Creek Choir, marking achievements in state and national recognition that bring pride to the entire community. The Jags began October with a phenomenal fall concert showcasing all BC Choirs.
Our students then excelled in the All-State Jazz Choir and All-State Show Choir auditions. Boulder Creek stood out among schools across Arizona with a remarkable number of students selected, including Jeremy Wood, who earned top honors as the first chair tenor for the All-State Show Choir.
Our All-State Show Choir honorees are as follows:
- Alto - 9th Chair: Grace Palmer
- Bass - 2nd Chair: Erik Lucas | 4th Chair: Jonny Nielsen | 5th Chair: CJ Dent | 7th Chair: Jacob Romero | 13th Chair: Dean Nielsen
- Soprano - 8th Chair: Elia Garcia | 9th Chair: Bianca de Guzman
- Tenor - 1st Chair: Jeremy Wood | 10th Chair: Aerom Sainsbury | 11th Chair: Jayden Hawley | 12th Chair: Jason D'Onofrio
Our students also made a strong showing in the All-State Treble Show Choir:

Our representation extends to the All-State Jazz Choir, where Jonny Nielsen and Berkeley Yano secured chairs in the Jazz Choir and Jazz Clinic Choir, respectively. These two groups are made up of the top 20 high school jazz musicians in Arizona and are directed by esteemed jazz clinicians from around the country.
Adding to their outstanding achievements, Autumn Stanley was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the West Valley Chorale Young Singer Competition. In the Junior Division of the Upscale Singer Competition, Lottie Andersen won first place and a $500 scholarship, while Jacob Romero earned $500 for his second-place finish in the Senior Division, with Jeremy Wood receiving an honorable mention.
On October 24th, our Varsity Concert Choirs and Honor Choir showcased their talents at the Bella Voce and Arizona Choral Educators (ACE) Fall Festival. Both choirs received "Superior with Distinction" ratings, the highest recognition awarded at this festival based on national standards, excelling not only in their choral performances but also in sight-reading.
Our students’ achievements this month are truly commendable, and we couldn’t be prouder. We invite you to celebrate with us on November 9th at Horizon High School, where these exceptional students will perform alongside Arizona’s best at 7:00 PM. Your ongoing support inspires our students and enriches our community, fostering an environment where they can thrive and succeed. Congratulations Choir on your amazing accomplishments and to your Director, Mr. Douglas!

Show that Jaguar P.R.I.D.E!
BC Jaguar PRIDE means that our Jaguars are Prepared, Respectful, have Integrity, are Disciplined, and show that Everyone is united! To ensure a safe, focused, and positive learning environment, we PRIDE expectations with students on Thursday in second period.
- This includes our expectation that students keep their cellphones on silent mode in their backpack so students can properly engage in learning.
- Students should be prepared with a fully charged iPad each day and any other items required for class to help with their success.
- It is also critical that students are in class and on time to be present for learning which is critical for their success.
- We also expect our students to be respectful of classrooms, school and personal property each and every day.
Please review our BCHS PRIDE expectations in our Student/Parent Handbook . Taking time to show Jaguar PRIDE is important as we work toward our mission of providing “a safe learning environment with rigorous academic opportunities for all students to graduate as productive, responsible, and contributing citizens!”
