NEW BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO EXPERIENCE CRASH REENACTMENT APRIL 23
New Berlin High School students will experience a crash reenactment at 10:00 a.m. on
Wednesday, April 23 in the school parking lot at 300 W. Ellis St., New Berlin, IL. The event,
designed to highlight the real-life consequences of impaired and distracted driving, is a
collaboration with SIU School of Medicine’s ThinkFirst injury prevention program.
Students need to "think first" about the repercussions of driving under the influence of alcohol
and drugs. Riding with a distracted driver can be just as dangerous. On the day of the event, sights
and sounds associated with an emergency response are to be expected.
During the reenactment, emergency personnel normally summoned after a car crash will simulate
their tasks. Those involved in planning and implementing the event include the New Berlin High
School staff and SADD Chapter students, New Berlin Police and Fire Departments, Illinois State
Police, Sangamon County Coroner and Sheriff’s department, Chatham Ambulance Service, Saints
Flight, Sheppards Towing, Butler Funeral Home, Audio Techni Services and SIU School of Medicine
ThinkFirst program.
Guest speakers for the event are Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon, Jim Poppenhouse, New
Berlin Police, Darrin Cummings, Illinois State Police and Tony Hofmann, victim speaker.
“The purpose of the crash reenactment program is to show the real-life consequences of risk-
taking behaviors,” says CJ Compardo, ThinkFirst program director. “This event illustrates what can
happen when a bad decision is made. We want students to be informed and make intelligent
decisions, particularly behind the wheel of a car.”
Each year 1.7 million traumatic brain injuries and 12,000 to 20,000 new spinal cord injuries occur
in the United States; one-third happen to people between the ages of 15 and 24. “The tragedy is
most of these injuries are preventable,” added Compardo.
The SIU School of Medicine ThinkFirst program is a chapter of the ThinkFirst National Injury
Prevention Foundation and presents events as a public service at no cost to schools. An Illinois
Department of Transportation grant supports the program.
Rain date is scheduled for Thursday, April 24, 2025.

What is 211?
With approximately 1.5 million nonprofit organizations in the United States plus scores of
government agencies, finding help can be confusing and intimidating. People who need help
often do not know where to begin.
211 call centers are staffed by trained specialists who quickly assess the callers’ needs and
refer them to the help they seek. It’s simple to remember, accessible to everyone, toll-free,
available 24/7, with multilingual capabilities.
211 in Sangamon and Menard County is funded by United Way of Central Illinois. By bringing
this service to the community, especially at a time when more individuals and families need
health and human service support, United Way is fulfilling its mission of mobilizing resources to
meet community needs.
