MBAEA Media Newsletter
November 2022
An Iowa Association of School Board (IASB) legislative and policy director and a teaching and learning specialist from the Iowa State Education Association (ISEA) recently provided administrators with some recommendations and guidance documents. Below is information related to libraries.
1. Determine how access to the library's online catalog is available.
Possible next steps: If patrons cannot access the library catalog or list of materials online, I urge you to add this to the website.
2. Develop a form and process if there is a complaint for books.
Possible next steps: In the last two years, many districts have evaluated, and some have edited policies. Evaluate your district's board policies, and if desired, communicate suggestions to the administration and the school board.
3. Evaluate the IASB Policy Primer board policy recommendations on the Iowa House File 802 and the House File 2577 Transparency legislation.
Possible next steps: Familiarize yourself with the policy recommendations and sample documents. Many are not required or mandated by Iowa statute; they have suggested options by the IASB for districts who want to be more proactive. Evaluate your school district's policies, and if desired, communicate suggestions to the administration and the school board.
To further your understanding of the IASB's organization, learn more about its mission, vision, and more here.

UNI Computer Science Endorsement Partnership with the AEAs
In September 2022, the Computer Science Education program at UNI (CSEd@UNI), Central Rivers and Grant Wood Area Education Agencies, and the University of Virginia were awarded a CSForAll: RPP scale-up grant by the National Science Foundation. This award is an expansion of CSEd@UNI's existing Computer Science Endorsement program. By partnering with the AEAs to provide more local access to high-quality computer science instruction, it will better serve teachers statewide. Participants will complete computer science content and pedagogy coursework through UNI while participating in face-to-face communities of practice (CoPs) facilitated through the AEAs. These CoPs give the participants a peer support network and will aid in the development of a localized, community-based support network — something highly valued in the original grant work. Participants who complete the program will earn the state of Iowa’s 5-12 CS Endorsement (#278). The total award amount is approximately $1,000,000 between 2023 and 2025.
This fabulous opportunity is open to educators across the state! Complete the interest form to be sent additional information and an application by January 31, 2023.
- Completing the form does not guarantee you a spot in the program.
- You will need to complete an official application for the program that will be shared with you later.
- Your responses help the team plan the in-person Communities of Practice locations to ensure equity of programming across the state.

PebbleGo & PebbleGo Next Updates
Previously, all eBooks were shown in our PebbleGo site's eBooks tab. Capstone has updated its site, and now these Read More eBooks have moved back to their home within the “Read More” tab on each article within the PebbleGo Animals and PebbleGo Science modules. You may temporarily see the eBook tab go away; however, Capstone has offered to auto-populate the eBook tab for all Iowa schools with 50 best-selling nonfiction ebooks published since 2021! These books will be loaded into school accounts over the next few months.
Your Read More books are still available! You will need to navigate to them through their articles within PebbleGo.
New Content
In August, 172 new articles were added, and in October, they released 56 new PebbleGo & PebbleGo Next articles. Last spring, several teacher-librarians discussed the difficulty of keeping elementary-level biographies up-to-date. I encourage you to read through the newest additions in both biography sections.
