Youth Services News
June 6
A Little Early
This newsletter is a bit early this week as I'll be out of the office Thursday and Friday. Apologies if finding this in your inbox put you in a Friday afternoon mood!
A few items of note:
- The Explorer Cards have been emailed to your library's SRP contact. This year the card is also available in Spanish, thanks to my OLIS colleague Neshmayda Calderon!
- If you are having difficulties accessing CSLP's online SRP manual, please let me know which part of the manual you need and I will put it in a Google folder for you. (I've already done this with the graphics - contact me if you need the link to this folder!)
- Throughout the next two months I will be working on putting together the 2018-19 CE calendar, including YART and CSRT meetings, the performers showcase, and booking meeting. I will share the schedule ASAP so you can plan your fall calendar accordingly.
- I will be out of the office June 29-July 6, and again August 14-17. Rest assured that Jeremy Cutler (jeremy.cutler@olis.ri.gov/574-9306) can help with all things SRP in my absence.
Best wishes for a great end of your week, and may all your SRP school visits go swimmingly!
- Danielle
National Summer Learning Day Read Aloud
From the Association of Library Services to Children (ALSC):
National Summer Reading Day is July 12 – Pick up a copy of Trombone Shorty to join the fun!
ALSC has partnered with the National Summer Learning Association to spread the word about how libraries keep kids learning during summer break. This year, NSLA has selected Caldecott winning illustrator Bryan Collier as its ambassador.
Librarians are encouraged to participate in a national read aloud of Trombone Shorty. Check out the NSLA webinar featuring ALSC and the Association of Children’s Museums for ideas on how libraries are using the book as a way to get children thinking about creating musical instruments and other STEAM-related projects.

Also be sure to sign up for the Mock Newbery newsletter on the Mock Newbery webpage.

Committee members typically read 12-15 children's books per month before deciding on the final list of 20 nominees in April. Committee members also participate (on a voluntary basis) in events such as the Kids Reading Across RI kickoff, the RI Festival of Children's Books and Authors, and the School Librarians of RI conference. Children's Sensory Story Time Support Group
Join us to learn about sensory story times at RI pubIic libraries. We will be discussing how sensory programs have been developing at various libraries, sharing ideas and tips to help improve services to children with special needs, and welcoming new partnerships with local organizations (RI Consortium for Autism Research and Treatment and The Autism Project) that provide information and resources to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families.
The Sensory Story Time Support Group is a grassroots community of practice developed and faciliated by Maria Cotto at the Pawtucket Public Library and Babs Wells at the Greenville Public Library. The Sensory Storytime Support Group seeks to empower youth services librarians to better serve children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families by expanding programming, outreach, partnerships, and resources that welcome all abilities. For more information about the Sensory Storytime Support Group please contact Maria Cotto at mcotto@pawtucketlibrary.org.
