Principal's Message 4.22.22
As you know this month we are focusing on responsibility. During yesterday's Rainbow assembly we discussed some of our responsibilities to our community.
Fifth graders shared the commitments listed below and then led our school in singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
In our community we are committed to:
Using kind words and thoughtful language when talking to classmates and teachers
Telling teachers or adults if we hear or see others causing harm
Learning more about others’ differences
Encouraging one another to be friends with and include others who may seem different than ourselves.
It’s important to stand up for others if you see or hear them being treated unfairly because they appear different.
When we witness unkindness we can interrupt, question, educate or echo what we hear to help the person reflect on their words or actions.
Thank you for partnering with us as we value each other and learn from one another at Lake Grove.
Be well,
Principal Jennie Knapp

Welcome Events for Incoming Lake Grove Families
As many of you may already know, the School Board decided to move forward with a Boundary change proposal that transitions about 100 students from Oak Creek to Lake Grove for the upcoming school year. I am honored and excited to welcome these students and families to the Lake Grove Elementary School Community. If you're interested, or if you are one of the incoming families and you missed it, there is a short one minute welcome video linked here.
We recognize that transitions like this one may cause some uneasiness, and we will do all we can to ensure a warm welcome and a positive experience for everyone involved.
As part of our initial welcome, we'd like to invite all current and incoming Lake Grove students and families to an evening ice cream social at Lake Grove on Monday May 16th from 5:30-7pm. This will be very informal - hopefully on the playground, weather permitting, ice cream will be available, there will be a short welcome from me, and a few activities for families to do if they wish. More details to come as we get closer.
Also check the Save the Date section below for some playground playdates hosted by current Lake Grove PTA members and families.
Save the date - talent show May 16
Lake Grove’s annual talent show is back LIVE this year! All talent is welcome and all Kindergarten-5th grade students are encouraged to participate. Space may be limited due to time constraints. You must have a practiced/prepared talent to share. Each participant must fill out the entry form, add a group name if it applies. All entries will be reviewed for school appropriate content (e.g. song lyrics). All entry forms are due no later than May 9th to the Lake Grove Office. Late entries will NOT be accepted. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Post.
Elementary iPad Update - Grades K-2
The District will update elementary iPads remotely beginning Monday, April 25 after school. To assist them, please make sure that your child's iPad is charging and connected to WiFi to receive the update. Thank you!
OSAS Schedule and Reminders
What students need to be prepared for state testing:
- Be well rested (good night sleep)
- Eat a healthy breakfast
- Bring a book to read when they are finished
- Encouragement (think growth-mindset!)
A reminder - students do not need a smartphone or smartwatch at school. We have a land line phone in the office where we encourage students to memorize an important phone number to practice dialing. Additionally, each Lake Grove student has been issued an iPad or a Chromebook. Please be sure that they bring CHARGED chromebooks for testing.
If a student has a smartphone or watch during testing it will invalidate their test (smart phones and watches are an impropriety, per state assessment regulations).
April 11 is the beginning of the Statewide tests for English Language Arts (ELA) and Math for all students in grades 3-5. Here is the schedule for the next few weeks:
Parent Input Form
Input is optional. Reminder, we do not accept specific teacher requests.
Forms are due: May 7
A PDF version is also attached to the bottom of this newsletter.
Thank you.

SEL Theme for April: Responsibility
“We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It’s easy to say ‘It’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.’ Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.”
~Mr. Fred Rogers
During the month of April, Lake Grove students will spend time exploring RESPONSIBILITY. As one of our three core values (safe, respectful, responsible), we teach and reinforce the skills and characteristics needed to show responsibility daily. This month we will deepen our understanding of responsibility through community discussions and classroom social-emotional lessons. Traditionally, responsibility is defined in a few ways: duty, accountability, and the independence to make decisions.
Here at Lake Grove, we will use the following definition: RESPONSIBILITY: to take action and understand how our choices affect others, ourselves, and the world.
To live responsibly, we consider our decision making and how it impacts ourselves and others. We take ownership of our choices with integrity and we practice the important skills of self-reflection and self-control. This month we will practice these skills and learn from people who show a lot of responsibility in their lives. By demonstrating responsibility in our activities and interactions, we can contribute to a more kind and generous world!
i-Ready Spring Assessment
Soon, elementary students in Lake Oswego will complete two online i-Ready assessments in class. One is for math and the other is for reading. As you know, i-Ready is a program that helps us determine your child’s strengths and areas for future growth. This is the third of three i-Ready diagnostic assessments we give each year, and the results will be shared with parents before the summer break. For kindergartners, this will be their second i-Ready assessment.
COVID-19 Screening: Participant Action Required

Safe Oregon
Parents-guardians who have concerns about a student’s well-being are encouraged to reach out to their principal, and to maintain strong lines of communication and partnership between students, families, staff, and other resources.
SafeOregon is also an effective way to report a tip regarding safety threats or potential acts of violence to our students or schools.
(Students should also be aware that intentionally providing a false report is a serious offense.)
