Weekly Family Message | September 6, 2024
Message from Ms. Hurst, Principal
Dear Pirate Families,
As we wrap up week two of the 2024-2025 school year, let me say thank you for your support and patience during this time. We understand that the transition to Infinite Campus has had some bumps, but please be reassured that we are doing all we can to resolve these issues and get everyone connected.
While we await more information on parent portal access, one way you can see grades and schedules at this time is through the student portal. Directions for accessing it can be found here.
We are also hearing that some parents are not receiving calls and texts as they have in the past. We have reported this issue and will hopefully have a resolution soon. In the meantime, please help us spread the word about all the ways we share information:
- Daily Pirate Post- student announcements that are sent to student email, posted on Instagram, X, Facebook, on our Live Feed, and on website. https://bit.ly/4g7DfFD.
- News from the Pirate Ship- Weekly Family Newsletter- sent to parent/guardian email, posted on Instagram, X, Facebook, on our Live Feed, and on website.
If you have any questions or feedback, please reach out. My email is melissahurst@johnston.k12.nc.us.
Enjoy your weekend, and we will see you on Monday, Pirates!
Melissa Hurst
Principal

Attention!
- Tardies We have begun marking tardies to class. Please make sure your student is in the building by 7:15. Late check-ins must come through Student Services.
- Dress Code- Please make sure you and your student have reviewed dress code expectations. When students are not in compliance with the dress code, our goal is to get them quickly into compliance and back to class.
- Carpool- Please use carpool. Parents bringing students to school in the morning should not be dropping off at the front of the school.
Student Parking
Student Drivers- Please remember that parking passes must always be displayed. Drivers caught speeding, revving engines, or driving recklessly will lose parking privileges with no refund. Students who are caught parking without a pass can and will be towed. Parking is a privilege that can be revoked at any time.
Parking Pass Sales- We still have spots available for sale and we will reopen sales on Monday, September 9. Students must bring a completed application. Parking pass fee ($120) can be paid online or in person.
Homecoming Dance
Homecoming Dance- Homecoming Dance will be held in the cafeteria on Saturday, Oct 5 from 7-10pm. Tickets will be sold during all lunches on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 9/10 and 9/26. Guests from other schools are allowed, guest forms can be picked up at the ticket table. Dress to impress– no shorts, no jeans. Tickets are $20 each.

Carpool
Carpool
The carpool drop off requires everyone to drive behind the school where they will be directed by on-duty staff to one of three drop off lines.
Students are not permitted to leave their vehicle until 6:35 am. Students will not be allowed to enter the building prior to that time. Students can not be dropped off prior to 6:35 am. Students will be given a signal indicating when they can exit their vehicle.
Upon entering the school through the middle gym door, students will be screened at the open gate system and directed to the Auxiliary Gym where they will remain until the 7:00 am bell.
After dropping off students, drivers are not permitted to pass other vehicles. Drivers are to remain behind the car in front unless directed otherwise by a staff member.
Just like the morning carpool drop off, the afternoon carpool pick up requires everyone to drive behind the school and pull into the gym parking lot where there are two traffic lines. As you arrive to pick up your student, each traffic line should pull all the way up to the parking lot exits so as many cars as possible can pull into the parking lot.

Bell Schedules

Beginning Tuesday, we will be on a regular bell schedule.
Infinite Campus
While we await more direction on parent access, you can view grades and schedule through the Student Portal. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to implement this statewide change.

Medication at School
This is a quick reminder of School Board Policy Code: 6125 (Administering Medicines to Students).
This policy covers the process for administering medications in detail, but the key detail I want everyone to keep in mind is that a health care practitioner (licensed medical professionals who are legally authorized to prescribe medications under NC law, such as doctors of medicine, doctors of osteopathic medicine, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners) MUST sign the Physicians' Order Form prior to medication administration at school. Parent/guardian signatures are required as well, but without the health care practitioner signature, medications cannot be administered. This includes ALL over the counter (OTC) medications.
Beginning of Year Documents
Every year, we ask our families to review and sign off on documents pertaining to their child's learning environment for the upcoming school year. Many of these documents can now be signed digitally. We ask that our parents and guardians review the documents listed below and sign the necessary items for each of their students.
To Be Signed:
Parent Guardian Verification Form
Tech and Digital Citizenship Agreement
To Be Reviewed:
Class of 2025
Senior Vaccination Requirements
MCV4 documentation is required to be turned into school nurse before September 25. Please bring a printed copy to Tammy Franklin, school nurse, in the front office.
