From the Desk of Your Principal
Dear Highlander Families,
Happy Friday the 13th! The final stretch. We are just one week away from a well-deserved, much needed break for many families. I hope you all can find the time to recoup, recollect, and spend quality time with friends and family.
2024 will come to a close and for me, and it has been amazing--in Gen Z vernacular, it was "lit", in millennial vernacular, it was "dope". While sad to have to leave my former school, I have found much joy and welcome at Piedmont. My New Year's Resolution will be to refrain from bringing a sleeping bag to work (smile)--but these Pajama Days are making it quite hard.
Please (please) stay safe during this holiday break, read a good back, watch a favorite movie, dance (like crazy) to your favorite song. We'll see your children fully energized on January 8 as we hit the ground running.
Warmly,
Dr. Yoshihara

Supporting Our Wellness Center
The Wellness Center supports 6th-12th grade students and their families to meet the challenges of adolescence, with the goal of fostering resilience and self-advocacy in all students. The Center offers free, confidential, on-campus counseling and refers students and families to vital community resources. The Wellness Center provides a safe, non-judgmental environment where students are encouraged to take responsibility for their physical, emotional, mental and social well-being.
The Wellness Center is funded in part by the Piedmont Unified School District, along with direct community donations, the Wellness Center Support Committee and PEF. All proceeds help to fund the PUSD Wellness Center, which serves Piedmont High School, Millennium High School, and Piedmont Middle School students.
Currently, there are several ways to donate to the Wellness Center.
- Donations to the Wellness Center Support Committee
- Donations to the Giving Campaign
- Donations through the Infinite Campus School Store
Thank you for supporting the Wellness Center!
Piedmont's MLK Day Student Art & Poetry Creations
What & When: Piedmont Anti-Racism and Diversity Committee (PADC) and the City of Piedmont will be hosting the 28th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration at the Alan Harvey Theater on Monday, January 20th, and would like to invite all K-12 students to submit personal art or writing inspired by the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to contribute to this special event! Check out this video to see some of last year’s amazing work! All participants will be entered into a drawing to win one of 10 gift cards to Mulberry’s. The deadline is Monday, January 13.
Creative Prompt: The theme of this year’s celebration is “Separate is Never Equal: What Unites Us?” Students are asked to create a piece of art or writing in response to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s quote:
In a speech in March 1966, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. called on people to never feel comfortable with any form of segregation, tyranny, or supremacy.
“I never intend to adjust myself to segregation and discrimination. I never intend to become adjusted to religious bigotry. I never intend to adjust myself to economic conditions that will take necessities from the many to give luxuries to the few.”
What does this message mean to you?
Submission Details: Art should be made on 8.5. X 11 paper; writing should be limited to one page. It can be dropped off at the front office of your school or uploaded to PADC’s website. Please include your name somewhere on your work. If you are dropping it off, please fill out and attach this form.
Questions? Please reach out to Ellen Lee at hiellenlee@gmail.com.
Staying Safe This Holiday
With the holidays upon us and folks gathering indoors, we’d like to remind you of some of the important ways we can all work together to keep our community healthy this winter. Not only have we entered cold and flu season, but RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus), pertussis (whooping cough), walking pneumonia (Mycoplasma pneumoniae), and of course, COVID-19, have all been circulating in the community as well. It is therefore important to be mindful when gathering with friends and family this season to prevent the spread of illness.

Career Day is Coming (2/28/25)
Mark your calendars! Our annual Career Day is set for Friday, February 28, 2025, and we need your help to make it a success.
We're looking for parents, alumni, and community members who are willing to spend a morning sharing their work experiences with our high school students as a presenter. Whether you're in tech, healthcare, the trades, arts, business, or any other field – if you're passionate about what you do, consider sharing that passion with curious students!
What does it mean to be a presenter at Career Day?
- The overall time commitment is approximately 1-2 hours of preparation in advance, and then 2 hours on the day of the event (Friday, Feb 28)
- On the day of the event, after a brief orientation, presenters will give two back-to-back 25-minute presentations to two separate groups of students during the Academy period (approximately 10:15 - 11:15).
- Presentations typically include information about the presenter's education/training, high level overview of their career path, what a typical day includes, and opportunity for student Q&A.
- Presenters will be provided with guidance and tools to create their presentations.
Interested in participating? Please complete our brief Google Form no later than January 10, 2025.
As we aim to represent a wide range of careers and industries, we may not be able to accommodate all volunteers this year. However, we deeply appreciate every response and will confirm speaking opportunities with selected presenters.
You'll hear much more about plans, including some new activities related to Career Day in the coming weeks.
Thank you for helping our students explore their future possibilities!
Counted Out: 12/17 at 6:30 pm in AHT
This event is just a few days away. ALPS has generously agreed to help sponsor the event and will provide light refreshments in the lobby. As such, we will open the lobby at 6:00 to allow for some mingling and early seating.
We will start promptly at 6:30 pm in the Alan Harvey Theater with the screening. The film is approximately 90 minutes. We will open with a few words from the Director/Executive Producer, Vicki Abeles.
This will be a community-wide event hosted by PHS (with generous support from PEF and our parent clubs) open to all. "Counted Out investigates the biggest crises of our time—political polarization, racial and economic inequity, a global pandemic, and climate change—through an unexpected lens: math."
We know math is everywhere. We do a great job with literacy. We want to do just as well with numeracy. Math is a language. This is the film. Math proficiency should not go down as students grow up.
We will be one of the first to host a screening of the film, and we plan to do a panel discussion afterwards with the director and others in the greater Bay Area. The audience will be given the opportunity to ask questions during this time as well. Vicki Abeles directed Race to Nowhere and Beyond Measure, reaching millions of viewers by focusing on social impact.
The panelists include:
- Vicki Abeles: Producer of the Film
- Rex Ridgeway: Volunteer in SFUSD/Lincoln High School (PTA President)
- Ella Levine: Founder of Firecracker Math
- Jelani Nelson: UC Berkeley Professor, Chair of Computer Science Division
- Sam Colburn: Math Instructor, PHS
Our moderator will be Auban Willats, Math Instructor, PHS
We will prioritize audience questions after the film.
This event is FREE to our community and we ask that you please RSVP below. Thank you.
Senior LaunchPad Program
📢 Attention Parents and Guardians of Seniors!
As the senior year reaches its midpoint, excitement builds for what lies ahead, but it can also bring some anxiety as students prepare for their next chapter. Senior Launchpad is here to help, equipping students with practical life skills to confidently transition to college and beyond. The sessions offered cover socio-emotional, financial, and physical transitions and their challenges.
While this event took place on December 9th, it was recorded. You may view the info session below.
Seeking Crossing Guards for PUSD
Interesting in being a crossing guard? Perhaps you are retired or have a job that allows you flexibility? Piedmont loves our crossing guards (shout out to Valerie), and we know the community could use more.
You only work on school days and training is provided. Crossing guards earn $20/hr. If you work borth the morning shift (1 hour) and afternoon shift (1 hour), you get an extra hour ($60 total).

Giving Campaign Help Needed...again
We continue to work hard at getting our families to support our schools. We still have a goal of 75% participation and now we'd like to focus in on our individual grade levels. We would like to offer an age-appropriate event (candy party, pizza party, etc) to any (and all) grade that beats last year's participation percentage.
This is where each grade was last year:
9th: 59%
10th: 58%
11th: 48%
12th: 48%
We'd still love to get to 75%, but beating last year's percentage is a great incremental goal!

Highlander of the Week
This week's student is Mina Herrgott. We start off by having staff share some thoughts on Mina.
What quality(ies) best describes this student?
Diligent, thoughtful, friendly, and inquisitive.
How long have you known the student?
One semester.
What is the most memorable event you have of this student?
Last week (week of November 11), Mina read her wonderfully written and thoughtful reflective essay in class. Mina's writing is exemplary and her reading was emotional, taking the class on a journey that was bittersweet in both tone and content. Her writing is mature and displays a lot of heart.
How does this student Achieve the Honorable?
Mina is always helping her classmates with extensive and thoughtful peer review, and she is not afraid to take a chance in sharing her thoughts and ideas with her classmates.
If there was one word to describe this student, what would it be?
Brilliant.
And from Mina herself:
- So far this year, what has been your most memorable experience? I went to my grandparent's 80th birthday celebration where my family and uncle's visited them. I got to spend time with family and have a lot of fun remaking connections with my cousins. We also went crabbing at a nearby lake!
- If you were to describe PHS to someone who is thinking about coming, what would you say to them? I would say that PHS is a great school, and you can take many opportunities and classes. There's also a good community and lots of support.
- If you were in charge at PHS, what is one action you might take to make it better? I would find a full-time librarian for the PHS library. The library is an important place, and it's closed about a third of the time.
- If you could share one sentence with your parents/guardians, what would you say? Thank you so much for supporting me and helping me thrive, I love you so much!
- What is your favorite word? Effervescent or ethereal
- What is your favorite song? Darling, the Planets by The Rare Occasions
- What is your favorite food? Pasta with marinara sauce tastes good and is easy to make.
- Can you share a photo of something from your summer and why it is special to you? This is a photo of the Girl Scout Cruise to Mexico that we went on over the summer. They had been saving for it since second grade, and I was also able to help for the last couple of years. Not only was it lots of fun, but I explored new places and I got to know the other people in my troop!
Thanks & Appreciations
- Wow, our Parent Club has risen to the occasion again--the staff is so appreciative of the lunch that was provided today. So much great food. You set the bar high and meet it every time. Thank you!
- Sally and Dana for leading on the Parent Club grants. Our teachers are so appreciative of the awards that you've given each year and look forward to the current awardees very soon.
- A shout out to Chloe M. Here is another one of our amazing students. Always a warm welcome, always a glass half-full, always comes with positive intent. So glad to have Chloe M. at our school!
- Kudos to Deniz. You've probably seen him on the sticks in band, but he is super articulate and full of wonderful ideas. Get his signature now because he could be the next Buddy Rich or Neil Peart!
Highlander Trivia
Thanks to all those that participated in the Highlander Trivia question last week. We had a wide range of answers, but a group of people were actually pretty close.
The question last week was: How many of our current students (current seniors and current freshman) got a perfect score on the Math and/or ELA CAASPP exam last year? If a student got a perfect score on both exams, you may count that as two.
The correct answer is 21. Congratulations to Noah S. who guessed 22. Noah S., please come by the main office and claim your prize.
