Please do not line up in the car line prior to 2:30. This causes a problem for afternoon deliveries, staff that travel to other schools and locations, parents who are leaving school meetings, etc. Cars that line up prior to 2:30 will be asked to return at the appropriate time.

Anyone picking a student up in the car line must have the PikMyKid app and the student must be delegated to the person picking the student up in the car line. If the person does not have the app, you will be asked to go to the office to pick the student up at the conclusion of dismissal. All parents who are picking students up in the afternoon car line should be in line no later than 3:10.

A few reminders about our Uniform Policy:

• Coats, jackets, sweaters, and sweatshirts must be solid navy blue. Hoodies of any color are not permitted. Jackets may have a hood but must have a zipper that extends the length of the jacket. Make sure your child’s name is written inside all outerwear! If your child does not have a navy blue jacket, they will be allowed to wear it to class, but not in class or around the school building.

• SPE club shirts may only be worn on meeting days and must be from the current school year. This includes Archery, FCA, Robotics, Destination Imagination, Be Kind, 4-H, and Honor Choir.

• Previous year's Field Day shirts may not be worn to school.

Unfortunately, the Family Scavenger Hunt scheduled for Friday, February 10th has been canceled. We look forward to hosting the remainder of our Winter and Spring events.

Black History Month is celebrated in the month of February every year across the United States and within classrooms. Each grade level as well as the enrichment team has planned activities that will expose students to influential African Americans that have made a significant contribution or impact on society. Students will conduct research, create lap books, view videos, make presentations and so much more.

Students will exchange Valentine’s Day cards and have activities in the classroom, but there will not be a Valentine’s Day Party. More information will be sent home from the classroom teacher.

Our 3rd-grade students are learning about Louisiana culture in Social Studies. They are hosting a Mardi Gras parade on February 21st for the students. If you have any beads or throws that you would like to donate, please bring them to the office by February 17th.

All students are invited to wear green, purple, and gold or a Mardi Gras shirt with uniform bottoms.

Bossier Schools teams up with the American Heart Association to GO RED on Friday, February 24th. Students may wear red shirts and jeans for a donation. All donations will be sent to the American Heart Association.

To celebrate Read Across America Week and our Spring Book Fair, several fun and educational activities are planned for the week of February 27th – March 3rd. The students will have the opportunity to dress up each day and celebrate reading. We hope everyone enjoys participating in this school-wide event as we celebrate the love of reading and travel across America with our theme days.

Are you ready for the Stallion Sprint? On Saturday, April 1st, Stockwell Place will host a Fun Run (½ mile) for kids 10 and under, 5K, and 10K. The Stallion Sprint will serve as our Spring Fundraiser so we need your help in making this event a success! The funds from the Stallion Sprint will help provide materials for student learning, professional development opportunities for teachers, and fund staff hospitality events.

• If your student is signed up to participate in the Fun Run by March 1st, he/she will be registered to participate in the Pre-Stallion Sprint Practice on Friday, March 31st. These students will be able to wear athletic gear to school on 3/31 and will participate in our pre-run activities in the afternoon. This event is one that your student doesn’t want to miss out on.

Field Day for 3rd-5th is on Wednesday, April 5th and K-2nd Field Day is on Thursday, April 6th. Our students look forward to this event all year long!

Field Day T-shirts enhance the team spirit of the day and help us to keep students safe and identifiable throughout the day. Students will be permitted to wear their Field Day T-shirt for the remainder of the 22-23 school year. Field Day t-shirts can be ordered and purchased online only beginning February 6th. If you can not pay online, please visit the school’s office between 9 AM-2 PM before March 8th.

Field Day shirt orders are due on Monday, March 6th.

What is Lexia?

Lexia is a computer-based program that helps all K-5 students improve their literacy skills. The activities in Core5 support and build on your child’s classroom curriculum and focus on developing reading skills in six areas: phonological awareness, phonics, structural analysis, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

How Does Lexia Help My Child?

At the end of October, all students took the Lexia Core 5 placement test. The placement test placed all students at an instructional level that is based on their skill level, not their current grade level. Because of the placement test, Lexia meets the needs of all students. If your student is struggling with any of the six instructional areas of reading, Lexia will work to fill any gaps and help your student to catch up. If your student is reading on grade level or above, Lexia will enrich their learning by challenging them.

As beginning readers, Lexia meets the needs of all of our K-2nd grade students by reinforcing the skills they are learning in class. Lexia is not only important for our K-2nd grade students, but it is essential for our 3rd-5th grade students. Due to Covid, most of our 3rd-5th grade students have gaps from lost learning during the pandemic. We are seeing evidence of these gaps in their reading, spelling, and writing. Lexia is assisting our teachers in filling these gaps that are crucial for our students to master by the end of 5th grade.

How Can I Help My Child?

While students have time to work on Lexia at school, many of our students will need to complete their Lexia units at home for homework. Directions to log in are below.

Students have two goals based on their level. If students meet these goals weekly, they are predicted to reach grade level by the end of the school year. The further the student is from grade level, the more minutes and units are required weekly. As students progress throughout the year, the minutes and unit goals will change.

At Stockwell, we are focused on the number of units gained each week. Teachers have communicated with students about their units per week goal. Students who meet their units gained goal will be rewarded each week. To check their units gained each week, check the home page when students log in to Lexia. A sample screen is shown below.

There are 21 levels in Lexia. The chart above shows the grade equivalency of each level. The levels that have been completed are indicated with a star on the student's Lexia map. Their current level is highlighted in blue. When students complete their level, they are rewarded with a trip to our Book Vending Machine.

In order to stay informed regarding your child’s progress, it is crucial each parent access the online portal. OnCourse allows you to view your child’s attendance, grades, etc. You can also select in the settings to receive weekly updates on your child’s current grades. https://bossier.oncourseconnect.com/

Over 75% of our parents have signed up for Class Dojo! Thank you for supporting your child and SPE by praising your child for their positive points in Dojo and monitoring any area that may need work. Teachers only record needs work after they have redirected the behavior and it is not corrected.

Please be reminded that teachers will not respond to messages through Class Dojo. Teachers only communicate through their parish email and by telephone. If you need to contact a teacher by email, their email address is firstname.lastname@bossierschools.org.

Our first Parents in Action meeting was held on September 28th and we had a great turnout. We are still seeking volunteers. If you are interested complete the Google Form.
