Health Class @ LME with Ms. Stacy

Dear Families of Intermediate Students (grades 3-5),

We hope your child has been enjoying health class this year. We would like to provide you with some information about potentially sensitive topics our curriculum is covering. If you have any questions or concerns or would like to review the lessons for the topics identified below, please contact me.

Puberty — Students will learn about the physical and emotional changes that occur during puberty. Students will also learn about internal and external reproductive anatomy. Instruction will occur in the co-ed health classroom.

Tolerance — Students will be talking about respect and the harmful effects of bullying. Students will discuss the importance of respectful social interaction with all people, despite any differences in race, gender identity, sexual orientation or beliefs.

HIV — Students in 4th and 5th grade only will learn about the HIV virus and how to prevent infection.

Sexual Harassment/Privacy — Students will learn about body privacy, refusal skills, and the importance of reporting sexual harassment.

This week we are finishing Unit 1. We will tell how to identify ways of acting that might lead to accidents or dangerous situations at school or in the community. We will explain why it is important to have rules at school and in the community. Students will demonstrate safety routines for school and the community. Finally, kindergarteners will use decision making skill steps to decide what to do to keep safe in different situations.

Finally we will use decision making skill steps to decide which community safety helper to contact.

This week we are finishing Unit 1. We will name ways that we might hurt ourselves or others. Students will conduct activity that shows how violence hurts people and recognize the benefits of peaceful conflict resolution. Second graders will practice good habits for avoiding fights and arguments using conflict resolution. Finally, we will classify sample TV programs as violent or nonviolent and show who is hurts by violence.

Conflict Resolutions Ground Rules:

1. Everyone has the right to speak.
2. Everyone has the right to be respected.
3. Everyone must agree to work together to solve the conflict.

Conflict Resolution Steps:

1. Identify the conflict/problem. (What is the problem or conflict?)
2. Discuss the conflict/problem. (What is your side of the story?)
3. Brainstorm solutions to the conflict/problem. (What might help solve the problem?)
4. Agree on a solution to the conflict. (What solution can you agree on?)
5. Name a trusted adult (If you cannot agree, who can help?)

Students will make a personal pledge to use refusal skills in risky situations. We will role play refusal skills in various unsafe/risky situations. Finally we will use the Prediction Consequences Skills Steps to determine what could happen if refusal skills are not used in risky situations.

We will make a personal pledge to treat others respectfully by taking time to stop and think before acting. Fourth graders will demonstrate what to do if you or someone else is being bullied. Finally we will predict the impact on a community when people take a stand against bullying behavior.
