What's Happening in Our School!
A Word From Mr. Quillen
PES Family,
This year we have adopted new curricular Reading materials through Amplify CKLA. This program is a very intense Reading/Language Arts/Phonics program that is different from what students have seen in the past and aligns with the Science of Reading initiative by the Indiana Department of Education. You may be seeing new strategies and assignments that involve more phonics practice in the younger grades, more intensive writing in the upper grades, and a wider variety of topics in the reading passages. At times, the students may experience some levels of frustration and challenge with this new material. As with any new skill, being challenged and having some frustration is all part of the learning process.
In addition to the new curriculum, we have set aside 30 minutes of intervention time called PROWL. This takes place 4 days per week and allows for students to receive additional instruction on skills at their present level. Students who are struggling with a specific skill can receive help at their level, while other students who have mastered it will receive more challenging or extension work. At PES, we also provide Tier III interventions for students who are struggling the most in Math or Reading. These services are provided to students in small groups throughout the school day.
