Principal's Message
Kellogg Families,
I cannot believe we are in the month of February! I am incredibly
excited that this week starts the first week of Black History Month.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., once said, “We are not
makers of history. We are made by history.” During this month,
we plan to celebrate many individuals that paved the foundation
for us to continue to build on.
This week is also National School Counseling Week, which recognizes the vital roles school counselors play in the lives of students across the country. Each year during the first full school week in February, schools, and teachers take time to show appreciation to the counselors who've made an impact on the lives of their students. Thank you Ms. Holly Vaughn-Edmonds, Ms. Kaela Borjas, Ms. Ashley Slack, Ms. Jeanette Scantling for all that you do!
Finally, Happy Lunar New Year! On Saturday, February 10th we say hello to the Lunar New Year. Lunar New Year is celebrated widely throughout East Asia and marks the beginning of Spring and the start of the new lunar cycle. Happy Lunar New Year and welcome to the year of the dragon!

School badge Requirement
Please remind your students to bring and wear their school ID daily. We’ve shared out many ways that our students can be safe by displaying their IDs throughout the day through our Advisory lesson. IDs are used on campus for quickly identifying students (this is especially helpful for Substitutes). In the future students use them to check out library books, buy hot lunch and be used by bus drivers to be sure that students are on the correct route.
Thank you so much for your cooperation.
Schedule Changes
Over the last week, the reading intervention team reviewed data of Fall and Winter Measurements of Academic Progress (MAP) testing. We used the data to guide our decision to move students into our What I Need (WIN) courses: Reading Enrichment, Reading Support or I-Ready (Math Support) class. We do our best to make the schedule changes least disruptive and acknowledge that this is not always possible.
We hoped our changes would be complete by Friday but saw the need to open another section of Reading Enrichment. Those changes will start on Tuesday. Thank you for your understanding and support as we strive to give students what they need.
Winter Formal: February 9, 2024
We are looking for volunteers! Here is a sign up list.
Here are the expectations for winter formal. Please review with your student.

REAP
Hi all,
My name is Altynai Watson (she/her) a Youth Essentials Coordinator for REAP (a community partner) here at Kellogg MS for this academic year! I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to teachers and families so you are aware of who I am at the school.
~ A little about me ~
I am an adoptee who was born in Almaty, Kazakhstan but grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I went to school at the University of Puget Sound and studied Psychology.
~Here is a little about what I do ~
REAP is a multicultural leadership organization where students can feel empowered by whatever their hopes and dreams are, regardless of their background. I work with students one-on-one to discuss goals or challenges they may be having at school or at home and we support and uplift student lives by giving them opportunities for student voice. In addition to one on one's during each day, we also have after-school programming (Tuesday and Thursday) where students will build skills regarding leadership and personal development. Lastly, we do have occasional events (Young Women of Purpose & Young Men of Purpose) where students can be engaged and connected with professionals in the community. We have more programs and other opportunities too that we provide for all students in the variety of school districts we serve so feel free to follow up with any questions you may have!
Please feel free to reach out to me via email (altynaiw@reapusa.org) or come find me in Room 111 for any comments, questions, or concerns. Look forward to connecting!
Save the Date for a upcoming event occurring next month for young women to connect with professionals in the community on March 8th at the Oregon Zoo. Transportation and food is provided. *This is a professional attire event* Sign up via the QR code on the flyer attached

Lunch
A number of students have been bringing lunch from home, such as ramen noodles. Unfortunately, we do not have a student microwave. We are seeing a large influx of students in the office waiting for our staff to microwave their lunches in the staff lounge. We will no longer be accommodating this request in the new quarter. Please speak with your children about alternative lunch options. Thank you!

Free Tutoring for ALL
PPS has created a tutoring option for all students to access! The information is here for how students may access tutoring support through the new PPS partnership with VarsityTutors through their school Chromebooks.
Snapchat Family Controls
Family Center helps parents get more insight into who their teens are friends with on Snapchat, and who they have been communicating with, while still respecting their teens’ privacy and autonomy. It's designed to reflect the way parents engage with their teens in the real world, where parents usually know who their teens are friends with and when they are hanging out, but don’t eavesdrop on their private conversations. Learn more here.
