News From The Principal
Happy New Year Explorers!
We are so thrilled to kick off 2025 with you all. This year we are excited to partner with families to help all students attend school regularly. Our goal is to have all students attend school 90% of the time or more. Research shows that to be graduation-ready, students need to attend school 90% of the year. Students who attend 95% or more of the year are proven to have even higher success rates in school.
Did You Know?
Starting in preschool and kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
Missing 10%, or about 2 days each month over the course of a school year, can make it harder to learn to read.
Students can still fall behind if they miss just 1 or 2 days every few weeks.
Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
Absences and tardiness can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.
Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Eventually, good attendance will be a skill that will help them succeed in high school and college. (Did You Know quoted from https://awareness.attendanceworks.org/)
If your child isn’t feeling well and you aren’t sure if you should send them to school, please contact our nurses at 360.279.5268. If your child is struggling to go to school for other reasons, please reach out to your child’s teacher or our school counselor at 360.279.5270.

Happy New Year!
We have some fun learning planned for the month of January! Students will be learning about arctic animals through nonfiction books and videos. All grades will also be taught another Digital Citizenship lesson, learning how to be safe, responsible, and respectful when using digital devices.
As always, please continue to encourage your student to read for at least 20 minutes a night!
Happy Reading!

Family Fitness Tip
Looking for an easy hike to get your family moving? We highly recommend you check out Hoypus Point Trail located in the Cornet Bay area of Deception Pass State Park. The hike is great for all skill levels and offers gorgeous views of Deception Pass Bridge.
Get outside for some family fun!
Our SOAR program begins in October. Each child in 1st - 4th grades at Broad View receives reading instruction at their level. Students who receive LAP or Title reading support, resource reading support, and those on or above grade level are all engaged in small group reading instruction at the same time as their grade level peers. This prevents students from missing any core instruction in their classrooms and ensures that ALL students benefit from our Title and LAP programs.
Please look for the SOAR section of this year’s monthly Broad View newsletters for tips and tricks on how to support your readers at home.
As your LAP and Title teachers, we are here to partner with you in meeting your child’s reading needs.

Attendance Matters
Good attendance helps children do well in school and eventually in the workplace. Good attendance matters for school success, starting as early as prekindergarten and throughout elementary school. By middle and high school, poor attendance is a leading indicator of dropout. Developing the habit of attendance prepares students for success on the job and in life. We are lucky to have such great families at Broad View that partner with us to make sure students are at school every day.
