Congratulations to Pelion High student Ivy Chen, who was named in the Top 30 and made it to the third round for the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP). Chen is a highly-motivated student who has strong leadership skills and is active in her school and community. In addition to being an honors students, she participates in student council, DECA, FFA, and the Spanish Honor Society. In addition, Chen plays tennis for the Panthers. She also received the Seal of Biliteracy in Mandarin. After high school, Chen plans to pursue a career in pharmaceutical science.

USSYP is a unique educational experience for outstanding high school students interested in pursuing careers in public service.

River Bluff High School Social Studies Teacher Michael Burgess was recently named the 2023 South Carolina History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. This prestigious award recognizes Burgess's outstanding contributions to American history education and celebrates his unwavering commitment to his students' intellectual growth and development.

Burgess was presented the award by S.C. Department of Education High School Social Studies Education Associate Kristi McKenzie-Amundson and Lexington One Social Studies Coordinator Elizabeth King. S.C. Senator Katrina Shealy, Lexington One Board Members Anne Marie Green, Kathy Henson and Chris Rice, along with Superintendent Dr. Postlewait, attended the award presentation.

In October, 11 teachers received Bright Ideas grants from Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative. Through the Bright Ideas program, MCEC support local educators and their students as they pursue innovative projects in the classroom. Each October, MCEC awards approximately $18,000 in grants to the winning teachers to help supplement often limited school resources for their creative classroom projects.
