Art Festival Help Needed! Please consider Volunteering
Sustainability Help
We're making a special effort at this year's Scituate Art Festival to divert solid waste from the landfill. Volunteers will work behind the food court booths in managing back-of-the-kitchen waste. Duties do NOT include hauling garbage, but instead focus on providing information and assistance to the busy food vendor volunteers. Please copy and paste the following link into your browser to sign up (Fri 10/11 through Mon 10/14). Online training for all volunteers will be provided by our partners at Epic Renewal.
Copy and paste this URL into your browser to volunteer:

We're also posting this invitation on the Scituate Facebook Page and the Scituate Sustainability Committee Facebook page, if you'd rather link from there. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you!

Computer Integrated Manufacturing: As we brought tool safety and operation testing to a close, students in CIM received a project with real-world application. Students showed their newfound prowess in woodworking by building parking lot signs. Anybody who drove into Hope Elementary's parking lot at Homecoming this weekend saw their handiwork. In the picture below, we see Aiden Ouillette setting his blade height on the table saw, Luke Carter concentrating on steering his board through the bandsaw, and James Jackson, Emmett Demeis, Bryce Guilmain, Stephen Cronan, and Michael Angelotti embodying the spirit of "measure twice, cut once."
Principles of Engineering
In class we've been learning about simple machines (levers, pulleys, wedges, etc) and how much mechanical advantage they give you, especially when they're made to work together as a compound machine. A bicycle is a great visual and tactile example of a compound machine; as you shift the front or rear gears, you change the amount of mechanical advantage you get. To apply what they've learned, students took measurements of all the parts of the bike's drivetrain to calculate how much mechanical advantage was actually present in a machine for each possible gear combination. In the pictures below, Max Jackson leads the charge on measuring the crankset while Ben Allen measures the rear wheel, Travis Vernon records the results, and Bellah Torres is quick with a tape measure.
From Science
Any idea what the pH (how acidic or basic) of your water might be? Well, S in STEAM students collected water samples from various locations at Scituate High School and from home. Home samples included kitchen sinks, bathroom sinks and rainwater. A few interesting trends we discussed:
1. Rainwater pH was 5 (acid) among all samples. This is 100 times more acidic than pure
neutral water with a pH of 7.
2. Well water pH tended to hover around 7 (neutral).
3. Tap water from a municipal home was also around a pH of 5.
Physical/Earth Science students worked within a guided inquiry framework to develop an experiment specific to each group in order to better understand and visualize inertia. Groups needed to decide what type of ramp to use, what material, what size objects with the capacity to roll down a ramp and troubleshoot experimental errors during the design phase that materialized during data collection. Here we see two students determining if the material chosen for the ramp will be effective and provide for useful data collection.

New to Scituate High?
Attention Seniors
Attention Seniors and Parents/Guardians:
As you prepare for life after high school—whether that’s college, trade school, or another path—it's important to take the necessary action for financial aid. One of the first steps is creating your FSA ID. Both students and their contributors (parents/guardians) will need an FSA ID to complete the FAFSA and access federal student aid. Check out this chart to learn who needs an FSA ID/StudentAid account. Learn more about contributors here.
Why is this important? The FAFSA opens on December 1, and getting your FSA ID set up now will ensure you're ready to apply on time. Without the FSA ID, you can’t complete the FAFSA, and without the FAFSA, you won’t be eligible for any federal grants or loans.
Even if you're unsure about attending college next fall, completing the FAFSA gives you more options. You never know what you might qualify for—and having choices is always a good thing!
Want to learn more about completing the FAFSA check out these tips.
All Course Network (ACN)
We hope the 2024-25 school year is off to a great start! Please see the most current ACN information below:
SPRING 2025 COURSES – Open Enrollment is underway!
- Preregistration: To be included in the lottery for these courses, students must preregister between September 12 and December 6 at 5pm in EnrollRI.
- School approval: School members have until December 9 at 12pm to log into their EnrollRI dashboards and approve or deny students for Spring 2025 courses. Students will be excluded from the course lottery if not approved by this date, which will compromise the likelihood that they’ll be able to secure a spot in their preregistered course(s).
SPRING 2025 COURSE LOTTERIES AND COURSE ACCEPTANCE WINDOW
The Spring 2025 course lotteries will take place on December 10. Students will subsequently receive an email notifying them of a seat offer or waitlist number on the same day. They have from December 10 (2024) through January 2 (2025) at 11:59 pm to accept or decline their seat offers. They may need reminders from you to update their dashboards with their decision so that their course offers don't expire. All courses with expired offers will no longer appear on their dashboards should they wish to enroll for the course during open enrollment.
2024-25 ACN SCHOOL MEMBER HANDBOOK
The updated ACN Handbook for School Members is attached to this email. Please keep this resource handy as it may contain answers to many of your questions. You may also visit the ACN website and the EnrollRI for information.
As always, the ACN team is here to support you through all phases of ACN implementation.
- If you or your students need support creating an EnrollRI account or logging in, please email HelpenrollRI@ride.ri.gov for assistance.
- For all other ACN inquiries, please email ACN@ride.ri.gov.
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

My tip: have fun, do all the things. Participate in Pep Rally, homecoming, prom, enjoy the last moments you have with your friends and soak them in! One day these will all be memories! Elena Grigelevich-Iacobucci ‘14
Try new things!! I know how stressful everything can seem, but I promise you the small things will not matter 10 years from now. Just be yourself and enjoy each day as it comes! - Peter Ruthenburg Class of 2014
Enjoy your time in school, make lasting relationships. Adulting comes with its own challenges and learning opportunities.

Scituate's Chapter of The National Honor Society
Seniors who are not already inducted into NHS, and whose cumulative GPA is 3.9 or higher, received an email on Thursday about potential membership in the National Honor Society. Those seniors were asked to respond to the email by Sept 16.
Current NHS members are expected to actively check the NHS google classroom for important information about community service, scholarships, and chapter events.
Juniors who qualify to be considered for NHS will be invited to apply after the end of first semester.
Freshmen and sophomores are not considered for membership in NHS until the end of first semester of their junior year.

Student community service needed!!
Every year we hold a book sale/fund raiser at the Art Festival. We could use student help, especially during the following times:
Friday October 11, 9:00AM until 1:00PM, and until 4:00PM if able, moving bins of books from a storage unit in the back of the library to the the tent in the front.
Monday, after 4:00PM, moving the empty bins back, inside the library.
We could also use help during the book sale on the three days, basically organizing the tables.
The biggest help we could use is on the Friday morning, moving the bins of the books.
Community Service paperwork will be provided.
Lynn Dion can be contacted at scituatemusic@hotmail.com
Thank you for any help with this project.
