UPCOMING CELESTIAL EVENT

A total solar eclipse will occur on April 8, 2024, where viewers in North Texas will experience an awe-inspiring celestial event that drastically changes the appearance of the two biggest objects in our sky: the Sun and the Moon. It also allows us to study our Sun, Earth, and space environment.

APRIL TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE

On Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk. This will be the last chance to experience this celestial phenomenon in the United States until 2045.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

There is no time when it is safe to look directly at the Sun without proper eye protection during any solar eclipse. This includes through windows, sunglasses, or any other means that are not specifically designed for safe solar viewing. A solar eclipse should only be viewed through special-purpose solar filters that comply with the transmittance requirements of the ISO 12312-2 international standard for filters for direct solar viewing.

WHEN CAN I SEE IT?

The total solar eclipse begins in Texas at 1:40 pm CDT and leaves Texas at 1:44 pm CDT. The maximum duration of totality in the Prosper area is 2 minutes and 16 seconds. Students in Prosper ISD will get the opportunity to view this celestial phenomenon during the school day on April 8, 2024. Safety glasses will be provided to students in grades 2-12.

Pre-K through 1st grades will be observing this event from their classrooms, via digital broadcast. The decision to restrict PK-1 students from going outside to experience the total eclipse while allowing 2-12 graders to do so is rooted in a careful consideration of their developmental readiness and safety. PK-1 students are at an age where they may have limited understanding of the potential risks associated with viewing a solar eclipse directly. In contrast, 2-12 graders are generally more capable of comprehending the significance of the eclipse and adhering to safety protocols under minimal supervision. Their age and cognitive development make them better equipped to appreciate and responsibly engage with this unique celestial event.

If you would like to OPT OUT your student from viewing the solar eclipse on this day, you must fill out the opt-out form by Monday, April 1, 2024. By submitting this form, you confirm that your child will not participate in the outdoor observation of the solar eclipse and instead will watch inside through a digital broadcast. Specific communication will be provided by each campus administrator.

Collin Technical Campus will be having an Open House on Saturday, April 13th.

Collin College McKinney Campus is hosting a really great event for graduating seniors on April 24th – Collin Bound. This is an exciting event for graduating seniors. Think of this event as a Preview Day in which students get a glance at all things Collin College. Students will be able to speak to financial aid, speak to faculty, get informed of academic disciplines, and speak to advising to see what holds they have and how to remove them. The Wylie Campus has held this event the last couple of years to huge success! We encourage all students thinking about attending Collin College to come see us on April 24th!

The Collin College – Celina Campus is hosting an event on Thursday, May 2nd for graduating seniors planning to attend Collin College. The Collin Bound event is a great opportunity for incoming Collin students to meet with advisors and professors, talk with financial aid specialists, and learn about all the opportunities as college students! All check-outs must be submitted through Skyward WITH AT LEAST 2 HOURS NOTICE prior to a student being picked up or released. When submitting a partial-day request, you must uncheck the all-day box and enter the time the student needs to leave the school. Partial-day requests entered as full days will automatically be denied. If we do not receive your request at least 2 hours prior to your students' check-out time or if the request is entered in Skyward after 2:00 p.m., it will be denied, and a parent, guardian, or emergency contact will need to come into the front office to check the student out of school.
