Bulldog Bulletin 09.11.24
From Our Principal
Reminder: September 25th is an Early Release day! ⏰
Wednesday, September 25th is our first Early Release Day scheduled for this school year. Students start school at their usual 8:00 AM start time, but students will be dismissed from school at 11:50 AM. Please plan accordingly and be sure to submit a Dismissal Plan Form if your child will have a different dismissal plan for that day.
Our staff will be engaging in a 3-hour professional development session with me on Early Release Days after students are dismissed. If you would like to donate a snack or beverage for our teachers to enjoy during their meeting, please sign up here and bring your item(s) to the Main Office on the Early Release Day you signed up for. Thank you in advance for giving our teachers something to look forward to on these long meeting days! 😊
Early Release Dates for 2024-2025: 9/25, 10/23, 11/20, 12/18, 2/26, 3/19, 4/23, 5/21
SAVE THE DATE! Back To School Night 9/26 Thursday 🍎
Richmond's Back To School Night will be an "open house" style evening from 5:30-7:00 PM for students to bring their family into our school to visit their classrooms and meet their teachers. This means families can come and go as they'd like between 5:30-7:00 PM.
The cafeteria will be open for families who wish to socialize and learn more about the extracurricular opportunities available at our school. The playground will also be open that evening.
Please remember that Back To School Night is intended to be a fun opportunity for your child to show off their school and introduce you to their teachers. This event is not intended to serve as a parent-teacher conference time for families. If needed, please reach out to your child's teacher via email if you have any questions or concerns regarding their progress in school. Unfortunately, teachers will not be able to dedicate enough time to each family to properly address your issues during Back To School Night.
FYI: Parent-Teacher Conferences will be on November 25th-26th, and Quarter 1 Report Cards will be available to families sometime the week of November 18th. More info will be shared as we get closer to these dates.
September Emergency Drills 🚨
Yesterday was our first fire evacuation drill and our students did a great job of evacuating the building in less than 4-minutes. Before any drill, I always make an intercom announcement to reassure students that it is only a drill and no real danger is present.
Today our students had a bus evacuation drill to learn about what to do in the event of an emergency on a school bus. Every student is required to participate in this annual drill because it's very likely that each student will ride a school bus at least once for a field trip. Check out the fun photos below from our drill.
On Monday 9/23 at 10:00 AM our students are scheduled to have their first lockdown drill. As always, we will take a trauma-informed approach to ensure that each student feels as safe, calm and prepared as possible for this drill. More info will be shared with families in the next Bulldog Bulletin.
Health Room News: Germ of the Week! 😷
As a parent of two kiddos, I totally understand the stress of getting that call from school saying that your student is sick and needs to go home. Unfortunately, keeping sick students out of school is the only way we can truly minimize the spread of illnesses.
Currently COVID cases have started to increase and many times it is showing up with stomach issues (vomiting & diarrhea). Please remember to keep your child home from school if they exhibit any of these symptoms. Also, it is still strongly recommended that people who test positive for COVID wear a mask for 10 days after the onset of symptoms.
Volunteers Needed! 🙏
Our parent organization, Oya No Kai, provides us with the Japanese intern program, which allows us to have interns from Japan in our classrooms who enrich our students' Japanese DLI school experience. Our students LOVE their interns, and two of our interns still need a host family.
Mr. Aubrecht is one of our amazing 5th grade teachers, and he also organizes our Safety Patrol, which allows our 4th & 5th graders to step into a leadership role within our school that keeps our campus safe during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal. We need safety patrol parent volunteers this year to help supervise our students at each crosswalk.
Matt Brown is our head custodian and he works extra hard during lunchtime from 10:45-12:10. To alleviate the stress of cleaning the cafeteria alone, we would love to have more parent volunteers in our cafeteria, especially during kinder, 1st & 2nd grade lunches (10:45-11:30) when students need more assistance.
If you can, please strongly consider volunteering this school year. Arigato!
Host Families Needed For Interns! 🎌
Looking for 2 host families for interns at Richmond Elementary School immediately before 9/20!
Hi, families! It is time for interns starting in April to have a host family switch!
* In general, interns switch their host families in the middle of their 12 months internship after 6 months.
We are looking for new home for 2 interns below:
Koki Tamura sensei (currently assigned to 2nd grade Japanese classes)
Kazuki Kawahara sensei (currently assigned to 4th grade classes)
Those interns have been supporting teachers, students, the school, and the program since April! Please consider hosting one of them to support until the end of their internship here!
If you would like to know more about any of the interns, please let Haruka Takanuma, Intern Coordinator, know by email at haruka.takanuma@oyanokai.org.
Period of hosting: October, 2024 - March, 2025
Requirements of becoming host families:
Have an extra private room for an intern (bathroom can be shared)
Living within 45 minutes from Richmond by Trimet
Your child/ren are not in their assigned classroom
(Unfortunately we cannot match interns with families who have kids in their classrooms for many reasons.)
Feel free to contact Haruka with any questions or concerns you have anytime!
Thank you!

Safety Patrol Supervisors Needed 🦺
Richmond parents and caregivers,
We are excited to launch another year of Safety Patrol giving our 4th and 5th graders an important leadership opportunity. However, before we begin recruiting students, we need to train a group of adults in our community who can commit to serving as patrol supervisors. Due to tight staffing and our scheduling model, we must get community help to keep this program running!
We will need an adult supervisor at each of our 3 intersections in the morning for 15 minutes (7:40-8:00) and again in the afternoon (2:25-2:45). (If your student is interested in the patrol, it may be possible to supervise their shifts.) Spread the word! The more supervisors we have the easier it will be to get coverage for all the shifts.
To become a supervisor this year, it is important to have a background check through security services and attend an in-person training at Richmond, room 203, on Wednesday, September 18th at 2:45 PM. Send an email to Bill Aubrecht (baubrech@pps.net) with questions.
Lunchtime Volunteers Needed 🥪
Get your Konstella account at: https://www.richmondptapdx.com/stay-connected/
Lunch volunteers will assist our students with throwing away leftover food/drinks, putting lunch trays away, wiping down tables, and sweeping the floors between each grade level lunch.

Just a few of several upcoming volunteer opportunities are listed below - stay tuned for more!
Classroom Support Co-Chair: This is a position that would be working alongside somebody who is already experienced in the position! This role works in the background to support families in supporting the amazing educators who teach our children every day. Coordinate the teacher potluck, card-writing, grade level contributions to the Oya No Kai auction, and more! This person is a member of the PTA board and a critical support to making many of our wonderful annual events happen! Please email stoner.jennifer@gmail.com to express interest!
Super Green Team: Super Green Team helps tend the school garden areas including the front of the school, learning garden, nature path, and Elm trees. SGT also helps with lunch time composting and various recycling drives throughout the year along with an awesome spring plant sale. If you have an interest in any of the above things and can lend some time, we’d love to have your help! Email us at greenteamrichmond@gmail.com or through Konstella and say Hello!
Equity: All are invited to join the Equity group. If you would like to participate email richmondequitypdx@gmail.com.
Volunteer to help at lunch time! We’re looking for Richmond parents to help in the cafeteria during lunch hours. Look out for sign-ups on Konstella!
Sign up to volunteer as a classroom representative! Would you like to be more involved in your student’s school activities, meet and organize other families, and help support their teacher with tasks big and small? Then you might want to be a Class Rep! Get more information, or sign up to be part of the PTA team that represents your student’s homeroom on Konstella here, or email stoner.jennifer@gmail.com. Your help and participation is MUCH appreciated!!
Website Maintenance: We are also looking for somebody who has experience managing websites to help update and maintain the PTA website. Please contact richmondptapdx@gmail.com for more information.
