FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Welcome Silver Lake Families!
We are well underway with our 2024-25 school year and had a great turn out for the September Open House and Annual Title I meeting. It was wonderful seeing so many families there participating in the scavenger hunt and learning about our school.
Silver Lake Elementary is a Title I school!
What exactly does that mean?
- Title I is supplemental funding provided to schools with a high incidence of students living in families with limited resources.
- It recognizes that typically, those students need additional support and opportunities to reach standard.
- It also recognizes that a high proportion of students with limited resources impacts all students in a school.
How does it help your student and family?
- We have hired additional support staff:
- Behavior Interventionist (James Allred)
- .5 School Counselor (Katie Seaward)
- Family Support Specialist (Buffy Osborn)
- .5 Multilingual Learner Teacher (Jenny Elgincolin)
- Academic Interventionist (Cerra Sand)
- We have additional resources:
- Staff Development and Materials
- Extended Day Classes (before and after school)
- Parent Involvement Activities ($5000 budget for events/activities)
What is required?
- A compact, or agreement, between parents, staff, and students is agreed upon together:
- The compact spells out each individual’s responsibility to help a student be successful.
- The compact must be reviewed each year and signed.
- Which of the suggestions for the School-Parent-Student Compact are most important to you?
- See the link to the feedback form below for your opportunity to provide input.
- A written Parent Involvement Plan documenting how the money will be spent:
- The Parent Involvement Plan must have parent input and suggestions.
- Some school planned events include:
- Teacher Meet and Greet
- Open House/Annual Title I Meeting
- SLAM Night (Science, Technology, Arts, and Math)
- Multicultural Night
- Spring Play/Musical
- Winter Music Program
- See the link to the feedback form below for your opportunity to provide input.
- A parent survey at the end of the year:
- To measure how well parents and students were served.
What are your ideas?
- What activities would you and your child enjoy doing together?
- How can we, as a school, support you as you help your child?
- Please complete the feedback form and return it to your child’s teacher or the SLE front office by Friday, October 18th.
The final copies of the Title I documents will be shared with all families at Fall conferences in November.

This year's International ShakeOut Day is October 17, when millions of people worldwide will participate in earthquake drills at work, school, or home. At 10:17 a.m. on 10/17, we will join others in practicing our 1st earthquake drill of the year. We will review our emergency procedures with our students to prepare for our upcoming drill. It’s also good to have a plan should an earthquake occur if you are at home. Take some time to look at the resources below and use them to help your family develop a good plan to have.

FROM THE COUNSELORS
Hello Silver Lake Families!
As we enter October, the counseling team wanted to update you on what we've been working on at school. The Everett School District utilizes two fantastic programs, Second Step and RULER, to help students develop skills for success in social, emotional, and academic aspects.
- Second Step focuses on fostering empathy by encouraging students to consider situations from others' perspectives. Empathy is crucial for creating a more caring school, community, and world, enabling us to connect with others, build stronger relationships, and promote understanding. Our K-5 Second Step program teaches students about responsible decision-making, working together to solve problems, and managing strong emotions. These vital skills are taught in classrooms by our dedicated Silver Lake teachers.
- RULER, a broader program that teaches emotional awareness and regulation, surrounds Second Step and aims to incorporate the principles of emotional intelligence into the fabric of schools, improving how students learn, and teachers teach and helping families with skills for home.
Sometimes, reading about feelings and emotions in such an academic way can make it hard to grasp why it's so important that these are taught in schools. SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) isn't just an extra subject to teach or something we add to the end of our day. It's part of the foundation for building thriving school communities, and research over time has shown that both Second Step and RULER help students perform better in school, feel better about school, have better friendships, and navigate the inevitable ups and downs that happen to us all. So far, our Second Step lessons have focused on goal setting, having a growth mindset, and understanding that it's okay to make mistakes. Over this year, we will explore both of these programs and give everyone skills that everyone can practice at home. I (Mrs. Seaward) have two kids at home, a 5th-grade son and a daughter in 8th grade. You may share this feeling, but I've noticed that parenting has gotten even more complicated the older my kids have gotten, and I welcome all the help and support I can get. I've started using principles from RULER at home with my kids to discuss how they feel about their days, classes, and homework. I've noticed that when my kids can name how they're feeling and take a few minutes to get those things off their chest, the other conversations become more accessible, and problems seem just a little smaller.
Over this year, Mr. Colin and I are excited to help you and your students as we all get better together at learning and practicing these skills. You can look forward to future newsletters giving actionable tips to try at home, and as always, feel free to reach out to us with any questions or concerns. We're here for you!

Silver Lake Elementary staff and students are working together to make sure everyone's culture is respected and that everyone feels like they belong at our school. Did you know that October is both Filipino American History Month and National Disability Employment Awareness Month?
There are over 21 different languages spoken at Silver Lake Elementary. Language is a big part of everyone's culture. One of the languages spoken at Silver Lake is Filipino, which is the national language of the Philippines. It is based on the indigenous Tagalog language, but is a modernized version with loan words from English, Spanish, and Chinese. The most common spoken languages at Silver Lake Elementary are English, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, and Arabic.
We also want to take a moment to celebrate our differences and promote understanding about disabilities. Disabilities can be visible, like using a wheelchair or wearing hearing aids, but they can also be invisible, such as learning differences or chronic illnesses. It's important for us to recognize that everyone deserves respect, kindness, acceptance and support, regardless of their abilities.
Encouraging our students to be empathetic and inclusive helps create a community where everyone feels valued. Let’s continue to foster a culture of respect and understanding, reminding our children that every person has unique strengths and challenges. Together, we can make our school a welcoming place for all. Please fill out the following survey to help us better meet your needs.
Behavior Intervention
Why Structure and Routines are Good for Kids:
Are you struggling to get your kids to get themselves ready for school? Get ready for bed? Finish their homework? Are you seeing tantrum type behaviors when asking your kids to try new things or increase their independence?
Research shows that routines support healthy social-emotional development in early childhood. In particular, children with regular routines at home have increased self-regulation skills, the building blocks of good mental health and self-assurance. When children learn to regulate feelings and behaviors, it means they are able to identify their feelings and have skills to manage those feelings so that they don’t feel overwhelmed. Young children who learn to do this well are better able to adapt to everyday challenges, stressors, and new expectations such as added independence with self-care, getting ready, or completing work for school.
Children do not learn to do this all at once. Just as when a child is learning other important skills like reading, writing and math, they need to be introduced to topics in a clear and logical way. Saying, “Go and get ready for school” may seem logical to us, but for a young child, it may feel overwhelming with too many steps; unsure of how to begin.
One way to support this work is through visual supports and step-by-step routines that are repeatable, predictable and clear. When first introducing a new routine or expectation at home, you can provide your student with simple, 2 or 3-step directions to follow using “First, Next, Last” language. For instance:
The complexity of these directions and visuals can increase with the maturity of the student, but the structure of having clear, predictable expectations for routines will help support the success of students of all ages.
If you would like to learn more about how to set up effective structured routines at home, please feel free to reach out to me at jallred@everettsd.org or ext: 6963 and we can talk about your exact situation and come up with solutions to support the routines at home.

EPS and SLE cell phone policy: What families/students need to know
Did you know Everett Public Schools implemented our cell phone policy and procedure in 2019? The policy, which is designed to support an engaging learning environment, applies to cell phones as well as all personal electronic devices (PEDs) such as earbuds and smartwatches. Below is a breakdown of what families and students need to know as we start the school year.
At Silver Lake Elementary:
- During the hours of 8:50a.m. to 3:30p.m. (or respective dismissal time): Cell phones/PED will be turned off and strored in backpacks. Students should not use these personal devices during the school day.
- Communicating with your child during the school day: If a student needs to contact a parent/guardian, they can do so through the classroom/school office phone. Likewise, parents/guardians can call the office for any urgent messages.
Disciplinary action: If a cell phone/PED is seen or used during the day, school staff will hold it in the office where a parent or guarding will need to pick it up during office hours. Repeated violations may lead to further consequences.
Special accommadations will be made if a PED is part of a student's Individualized Education (IEP), 504 Plan, or Individual Health Care Plan (IHP).
DOWNLOAD THE VERSATRANS MY STOP APP TO TRACK YOUR STUDENTS BUS
We are using a new Versatrans My Stop application for bus route tracking and information. The Versatrans My Stop application provides you with an estimated time of arrival for your student's school bus. Please continue to arrive at the scheduled bus stop location 5 minutes prior to the scheduled stop time.
How to Log In
All information is transmitted securely and protected. No data is provided without proper credentials being provided.
1. Enter your student’s ID number in the username field.
2. Enter your student’s date of birth in the password field. Use the mmddyyyy format with no slashes. For example: if your student was born on Jan. 1, 2017, your password would be 01012017
3. If you have more than one student, their names will appear in a drop-down list in the top left corner. To view a different child's bus information, select their name from the dropdown list.
4. In your phone settings, under Notifications, scroll to the Versatrans My Stop app and make sure:
- show notifications are in the on position.
- pop on screen is also in the on position.
5.This will allow you to see any notification that Everett Public Schools sends through the Versatrans My Stop App.

Family Support
Hello Silver Lake families from Mrs. Osborn in Family Support, here are a few resources that are helpful to our local families.

This is available until February, so if you find yourself in need and are eligible, I can send you a form home or a link to print and fill out and send into your teacher.
- I've received food forms for our Weekend Food Program where kids in need get a food bag on Fridays. If I missed sending you a form home, please reach out and I will get one to you. Bosborn@everettsd.org
