Hometown Hero
In a heartwarming display of dedication to his community, Antonio Gibilian, an assistant wrestling coach and firefighter in West Allis, has been named a Hometown Hero. The accolade, bestowed upon individuals who exhibit an unwavering commitment to uplifting those around them highlights Gibilian’s remarkable efforts in improving the lives of West Allis residents.
Antonio’s journey as a Hometown Hero began when he saw a need within his alma mater, Nathan Hale High School. With a passion for wrestling and a deep connection to his community, Antonio stepped up to ensure that the school’s wrestling program didn’t fade away. Rallying fellow coaches and volunteers, he breathed new life into the team, emphasizing not just athletic excellence but also academic success.
Gibilian’s impact extends beyond the wrestling mat, as he prioritizes the academic success of student-athletes under his guidance. Recognizing the importance of education, he implemented a study table during wrestling practices to assist athletes struggling with grades, ensuring they received the support needed to excel both on and off the mat.
His dedication to the well-being of West Allis has not gone unnoticed. Head Coach Armondo Suarez Del Real, who nominated Gibilian for the prestigious Hometown Hero award, praised his tireless efforts in nurturing the next generation of leaders.
Gibilian’s recognition as a Hometown Hero serves as a testament to the profound difference individuals can make when they selflessly devote themselves to their community. As he receives this well-deserved honor, let us all take a moment to appreciate and celebrate Antonio Gibilian’s outstanding contributions to West Allis.
Join us in celebrating Antonio’s achievements and thanking him for his outstanding contributions to West Allis!
A Partnership Between WAWM and the West Allis Rotary Club
We are very thankful for the partnership between the West Allis Rotary Club and our school district. Rotary plays a key role in supporting our students through various means. Each week students from the Interact Clubs in our secondary schools participate in Rotary. Students share the service projects that they are currently working on. Members of Rotary are quick to offer support and guidance. Most recently, the West Allis Central Interact Club provided materials to make sandwiches for the Community Outreach Program. This program offers food assistance to anyone in the community.
The West Allis Rotary club is also sponsoring the implementation of a reading program at Irving Elementary. Students spend time reading with one of the shelter dogs or Humane Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) alumni dogs. The presence of a calm and attentive dog while students read aloud has proven to reduce stress, improve concentration, and increase confidence. The animals also benefit from one-on-one time, interaction, and socialization. The Rotary Club is sponsoring a field trip in May for he students to visit the Schallock Center for Animals in May to read to the animals.
Solving the Housing Crisis in Our City
Students in Mr. Matt Marino's Flex 9 Architecture classes at Nathan Hale High School were presented with a challenge at the start of 3rd quarter. The challenge was to solve the problem of how to house the average American family in an efficient, economical and life-enhancing work of art, and how to seize new technologies and production techniques.
To conquer this challenge, students toured local homes that were designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. They were able to draw inspiration from his American System-Built Homes. Through ample amounts of collaboration and an abundance of critical thinking, students then designed, built, and marketed the houses. Students used higher level math and science skills to lower the cost of housing and create housing that is eco-friendly.
Students shared their projects with local professionals in the field of architecture, members of the Department of Public instruction, members of the West Allis- West Milwaukee Board of Education, the Mayor of West Allis, University of Milwaukee Service Leaders, family members, Nathan Hale staff, and peers. This even caught the attention of CBS 58 who covered the event (click here to see the news segment). The project was all a part of Nathan Hale's third annual Empathy in American Architecture Project.
