Facts About Gary
Gary D. Schmidt is a children's writer of nonfiction books and young adult novels. Both a Newbery Honor and a Printz Honor was awarded to the book Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy and a Newbery Honor was awarded to The Wednesday Wars. The most recent book that he has written is Orbiting Jupiter. Schmidt went to University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He lives on a farm in Alto, Michigan, with his wife and 6 children, where he splits wood, plants gardens and writes. He is now a Professor of English at Calvin College. In his school life, he was really bad at reading so he didn't read much but a kind teacher named, Miss Kabakoff taught his how to read a lot better. After that, he LOVED to read. He read anything and everything. Where does Gary write? Well he answered this question himself. "I have a study in a small outbuilding away from the house. It has a desk, a lamp, more books than should be in a room, and a woodstove. I work at a type writer, and lots of scrap paper around me. This means, by the way, that if anything comes out pretty awful, I can just open the woodstove and and burn it all. The feeling of relief is remarkable."
