HB 287
Governor Kemp signed House Bill 287 (HB 287) into state law. The legislation requires the inclusion of tobacco and vapor products in the list of mandatory instruction concerning drug and alcohol use for K-12 students in every grade, every year. Modifications to Georgia’s health and physical education standards reflect the change in the standards. Physical education teachers met to identify grade-appropriate lessons on cigarettes and vapor products, and teachers are incorporating lessons and resources aligned to state standards in their lesson plans.
HB287 also requires state boards of education to prescribe a course of study about human trafficking awareness for students in grades 6-12. Changes to state curriculum standards have occurred to reflect the newly adopted legislation. Marietta City Schools is partnering with Susan Norris and Rescuing Hope (a local non-profit organization) to provide instruction in human trafficking awareness to students in grade 6 through the Play it Safe presentation.
Please see the attached letters below for more detailed information.
If you would like to opt your student out of participating in the HB 287 presentations, please notify Heather Welch via email at hwelch@marietta-city.k12.ga.us or phone at 770-422-0311 ext. 5615 on or before December 13, 2024.
