PICTURES & NEWS
BAND CONCERT AND STRINGS ORCHESTRA
This was the first large musical event of the 2023/2024 school year. So many strings and band students were involved that they seemed to take up half the gym space. The rest of the area of the gym was allocated to family members and staff who came out in large numbers to support the musicians. It was a fun event to watch as it moved quickly. There was so much joy and nervous excitement in the different performances beginning, intermediate and advanced groups of students participated in. Here are the various clusters of pictures taken over the course of the evening on Thursday, November 9th.
40 Pictures of the students warming up.
32 Pictures of the Strings Orchestra.
21 Pictures of New students this year.
18 Pictures of Students with a little over one year of experience.
VETERANS DAY BREAKFAST AND CEREMONY
Team USA's 7/8th grade learning community organized a breakfast and appreciation ceremony for veterans on Friday morning, November 10th. Coffee and donuts were served by students in the school library to veterans and their family members during a 45-minute-long social breakfast. The breakfast was followed by a ceremony of music and three short speeches.
This breakfast and ceremony had the best turnout of veterans, students, and teachers we have seen in many years. Teacher, John Cioffi, and student, Sam Bowen acted as masters of the ceremony for the event. All the 7th and 8th graders attended. The Community Service Open Doors group dropped by to give thank you cards to attending veterans. The 7th & 8th grade band played the national anthem and the 7th & 8th grade chorus sang a special song.
William Drake, a Renaissance student, and Maddy Abair, a USA student, each gave short and heartfelt speeches to the veterans. The last to speak was Corey Chevalier, a former St. Albans City School student (graduate of 2000) and decorated veteran. He talked about his appreciation for the veterans and military personnel of all past and present conflicts who have given us the freedoms we enjoy. He also shared with the audience the honor he feels to have served this country as a marine.
The event concluded with an invitation for everyone to attend the Veterans Day parade and Ceremony that will take place on Saturday, November 11th downtown at Taylor Park.
EVENTS OR OPPORTUNITIES
SACS ART DISPLAY COMING TO THE ST. ALBANS FREE LIBRARY
Families of the students listed below,
Your child’s art has been selected by their peers to be put on display at the St. Albans Public Library in the Young Adult/Youth section on the second floor. The work will be displayed from the week of Thanksgiving through the month of December. Please go take a look at the wonderful work that they created and perhaps check out a book or two while you are there.
The work being displayed is:
7th and 8th grade printed patterns. Students printed a circular or square grid on muslin. They used brayers, printing ink, and the back of an old coca-cola crate. They were then tasked to create a theme within the empty spaces. Students used colors, shapes, lines, symbols, and patterns to unify their designs. The display of the pieces together establishes a quilt-like effect.
6th grade crazy eyes. Students have been practicing different elements related to portraiture. In this project, students blocked out the shape of an eye and splatter painted around it. They then used either marker, colored pencils, watercolor or a combination of materials to create the details in the eye. There was an emphasis on layering color for the iris, creating a dark pupil with a highlight, and adding eyelashes.
I am so proud of the wonderful art that was created. Keep up the good work.
8th grade students are: Shay, Alora, Forest, Evan, Ethan, Lilliana
7th Grade students are: Maliyah, Miley, Natalie, Payton, Maddy, Autumn, and Celia
6th Grade students are: Cayleigh, Morgan, London, Carly, Siri, Bob, Kianna, Charlotte, Taylynn, Jarley, Scarlette, Finn, Olivia, Trinity, Bailey, and Ali
Sincerely,
Ellen Montgomery

NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH
November is Native American Heritage Month, or as it is commonly referred to, American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month. The month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. Take a peek at the display in the library or follow this link to our virtual collection to explore these texts all month long!
KEEPERS OF THE EARTH
Beginning with Native American stories, this invaluable resource provides hands-on activities that inspire children to understand and appreciate Native American cultures and the Earth.
ANCESTOR APPROVED
Native families from Nations across the continent gather at the Dance for Mother Earth Powwow in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
In a high school gym full of color and song, people dance, sell beadwork and books, and celebrate friendship and heritage. Young protagonists will meet relatives from faraway, mysterious strangers, and sometimes one another (plus one scrappy rez dog).
They are the heroes of their own stories.
