Week 8 updates!
Week 8
October 18-21
I hope everyone had a wonderful, long weekend! I am sure the students needed it as much as teachers did :) I hope you got to enjoy the State Fair, and eat lots of yummy, fried food!
Important Dates:
10/10- Reading Tutoring Wednesday 3:00-4:00 and Thursday 7:30-8:00
* Due to conflict of schedules with other teachers, I am going to move tutoring sessions to Monday afternoon from 3:00-4:00 instead of the Wednesday sessions.
This should help more students be able to attend both Math and Reading tutorials. I will be sending home letters to inform all parents of the change in Tuesday folders. Thank you for your flexibility and patience :)
Monday tutorials will begin October 24 (3:00-4:00)

Oct. 27-Team up against drugs- wear your favorite sports shirt!
Oct. 28-Don't be tricked, say boo to drugs- wear your black and orange!

Reading Workshop/ Independent Reading/ Workshop Stations
Units of Study: Traditional Literature: Readers understand the different types of traditional literature so that they can identify characteristics of each type.
We are finishing our unit: comparing & contrasting myths and legends as well as publishing our own myths this week in writing.
Book Clubs: Isis and Seven Scorpions, King Arthur and Anansi the Spider
Assessment: Test on Wednesday over Comparing and Contrasting myths using paired passages. Analyze and review test Thursday using think-pair-share strategies.

Readers can identify poetry and explain why authors write in poetic form so that they can appreciate the art of poetry.
Begin poetry unit by creating engaging activity: "Falling into Poetry" in class.

Social Studies Trading Card Project- begin on October 18, Due on November 2
**the SS project may be done at home for homework if not completed in class**

American Revolution: We have read "Sleds on Boston Common, Letters from the American Revolution and Paul Revere's Ride this week for ELA/SS.
Social Studies Weekly Magazines Week 5- Independence and review "Liberty Kids" videos to see how the American Revolution was started.
Extra fun: The Boston Daily Newspaper, Trading Cards Research project, Patriots of the 1700's study.
Vocabulary- words to know: independence, protest, intolerable acts, delegate, militia, minutemen, Continental Congress, revolution
