Need to Know
Terry Fox Run 2024
Students are invited to wear their House t-shirts and Selwyn House Athletics wear to school on Friday, and they will be running the Terry Fox Run with their classes at Westmount Park. Students should bring a reusable water bottle to fill up at the water station. Donations to the Terry Fox Foundation can be made via our school fundraising page, and we encourage you to watch this video to find out more about Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope. Senior school students will run at 2:15 p.m. with their Period 5 classes. After the run, students will be dismissed from the park and should return to school to attend their PE class.
60th Anniversary of the Peacekeeping Mission in Cyprus
On September 24, Selwyn House has been invited to bring a small number of students to attend the commemorations of the 60th Anniversary of the Peacekeeping Mission in Cyprus. The ceremony will take place at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa in the morning. The boys will then have lunch with veterans in the Museum, and they are invited to attend the unveiling of the new Cyprus Project at the museum. Following the festivities, the boys will be welcome to visit the museum on their own. Students must be at Loyola High School for 6:45 on the day, and will return there by 5:30 PM. Interested students should contact Mr. Watson by email to let him know NO LATER THAN MONDAY. We will take people on a first-come, first-served basis.
Truth & Reconciliation Week: Sept. 23-30
During the week of September 23rd through September 30th, the school will be engaging in learning opportunities and activities based on the theme: Taking Truth to Action, inspired by programming from the National Centre for Truth & Reconciliation. Students and staff will honour the lives lost from Canada’s residential school system on September 30th by wearing orange shirts. Students may wear ANY orange shirt on Sept. 30 with their uniform pants and proper school shoes. Our orange shirt design is the same as last year, featuring a two row wampum. You may purchase a shirt via this Google Form. Shirts will be distributed to Homeroom Teachers (ES), Core Group Teachers (MS), and available for pick up in Ms. Kaur’s office (SS). These orange shirts may also be worn throughout the year as part of the SHS physical education uniform. All proceeds will go towards an Indigenous organization in Kahnawake to be determined by the Indigenous Student Committee. If you have any questions, please contact Eden Schwartz.
Attestation Day
Monday, September 30 is the official MEES (Ministère de l'Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport) attendance verification day. On this day the school is required to report to the ministry the actual student attendance and subsequently register each student for the 2024-2025 academic year. Please avoid scheduling appointments on this day. Your child’s/children’s attendance will alleviate significant paperwork for families and the school. For questions, email Ms. Kelli Poulin (poulink@selwyn.ca).
Course Changes
We wanted to remind everyone that the window for course changes has now closed. We appreciate your understanding as we settle into the new academic year. If you have any questions or need assistance related to your son's academic courses, please don't hesitate to reach out to Mr. McCarney.
Contactivity
Calling all students! We are looking for students to join our Contactivity Programs this fall. If you enjoy connecting with senior citizens, please fill out this sign-up form by September 29. Middle and Senior School students can be paired with a Senior citizen for the fall term to chat weekly in person or on Zoom. Middle School students can also join our Crafting Club to learn how to knit, make jewelry, and more from Contactivity members.
Grade 11 Outdoor Ed Trip - BOLD
This trip will be fully student planned and student led. Where we go, what we do, gear and food, packing, navigation, safety considerations - all this will be in the hands of the group that is chosen for this expedition. This trip qualifies for Duke of Ed GOLD adventurous journey. Spots are limited. Priority will be given to students who have excelled in the Selwyn outdoor trips or have demonstrated a peculiar affinity to the outdoors. Sign up here by Sept 30th.
