Sleds and Outdoor Clothing
Please note that only roll-up plastic sleds are allowed at Kinosayo. Any sort of sled brought in that isn't a roll-up plastic one will not be allowed, and parents will be required to come and pick it up from the school. The safety rules for sledding that we will be following are below; please review them with your children so they know the expectations if you are allowing them to bring a roll-up plastic sled to school with them.
Also a gentle reminder to parents to send your children with mitts/snowpants/etc to be ready for any weather. Even if you don't think it will snow during the day, the weather can always surprise so it's better to send your child to school prepared! (If you do not have the resources to purchase winter coats and mittens at this time, please reach out to Mrs. Gonsalvez, and the school will arrange getting some for you.)
Kinosayo Sledding Safety Plan
According to the Safety Guidelines for Physical Activity in Alberta Schools ( pp. 127, June 2013). Sledding is suitable for Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12.
They suggest the following considerations:
On-site supervision
Students must not stand on sleds. They should be seated or kneeling
Students should not be allowed to push others or run up sliding area
There should be a safe distance between descending sleds
Students should not be allowed to jump in front of descending sleds
A safety procedure for students to clear bottom area and to return to top of hill should be established
Students should not be allowed to ride sleds over jumps or obstacles
Snow should be packed, but not icy, with a grade of incline no greater than 30 degrees.
Area should be designated a “sledding area”
At Kinosayo, we follow the above guidelines along with the following specific instructions:
Only roll up flat plastic sleds allowed--No foam, thick plastic, wood, or metal.
Personal sleds must be hung on hooks, rolled up in backpacks, or stored in lockers. No laying on floors in hallways.
Only one person per sled
No sharing personal sleds
The school does not provide sleds for recess play
Our designated “sledding areas” are: Division Two on Red/Blue park hill; Division One on hill between yellow/green and spiderman park. No other areas are for sledding.
