Meeting Recap
On Monday, October 10, the District 146 Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting.
The Board began by honoring John Malloy with induction onto the District 146 Wall of Fame. Mr. Malloy was a member of the Board of Education for 16 years. He served as Vice President and President before retiring from the Board earlier this year.
During the meeting, the Board heard from Superintendent Dr. Jeff Stawick:
- The District once again qualifies for the Property Tax Relief Grant. Based on preliminary information, the District will abate approximately $2 million in exchange for approximately $1.4 million in state funding each year after.
- The District held an Institute Day on Friday, October 6. Staff participated in sessions on experiential/problem-based learning, the new standards-based report card for elementary students, MAP data, Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP), and Safe and Civil Schools.
- Parent Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Thursday, October 26 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Information on signing up for conferences will be sent to families by the school principal and District in the coming weeks.
- Report cards will be shared with families on November 30. CMS students will have access to their report cards via PowerSchool. Families with students in kindergarten through 5th grade will receive the new standards-based report card via email. Additional details will be available to parents and students through PowerSchool. More information about the new report cards will be sent to parents in the coming weeks. Pre-K parents will receive paper copies of their child's report card.
- The general education and special education bus service has improved since the beginning of the school year. Although there are still some delays, the Business Department and bus companies are doing everything they can to minimize the issues being caused by the nationĀ wide bus driver shortage.
- The Joint Annual Conference for School Board members is November 17-19. Board members have been registered for the conference.
- Dr. Stawick has been selected to participate in Vision 20/30, the extension of the Vision 20/20 initiative lead by the Illinois Association of School Administrators. Vision 20/20 resulted in public education reform in the State of Illinois including the Evidenced Based Funding model.
- The Illinois Association of School Boards recognized Board President Darcy Nendza as an
- Established Board Leader. Board Member Dean Casper received an Annual Merit recognition. Dr. Stawick congratulated both on behalf of the District.
- Governor Pritzker has proclaimed October 15-21as Principals Week, and October 20th as Principal Appreciation Day. Dr. Stawick thanked the principals and assistant principals for their hard work every day.
- The Board will be asked at the November meeting to declare curriculum items as surplus so they can be donated, sold, or disposed of.
The Board also heard the following:
- The ESP union president said the paraprofessionals have settled in with the students, are having fun, and are getting ready for upcoming school events and holidays.
- Jeff Charleston presented the Quarterly Investment Report as required by School Board Policy.
The Board took the following action:
- Declared technology equipment submitted at the September Board Meeting as surplus.
- Approved a trip for the CMS Band. The plans are being kept confidential from the public so the band director can surprise the students.
The Board met in closed session to discuss personnel matters prior to adjourning.

Next Board Meeting
The next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, November 13, 2023. The meeting will be held at Central Middle Schoo, 18146 Oak Park Avenue, Tinley Park, IL.
