Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) is part of the Virginia Department of Education’s continuing efforts to improve the testing experience for students. A CAT is an assessment that is customized for every student. How a student responds to a question determines the difficulty of the next item. A correct response leads to a more difficult item, while an incorrect response results in the selection of a less difficult item for the student.

In 2014-2015, most students taking the grade 6 mathematics test will be administered a computer adaptive version of the Standards of Learning (SOL) test.

Promethean ActivExpression devices an be used to instantly assess student learning or obtain feedback. The devices work in conjunction with Promethean's ActivInspire software, which is requires to use them. Having an ActivBoard can enhance the use of the Expressions, but is not required.

All TRTs in the school division are Promethean Master Educators and can assist you with setting up and using ActivExpressions for self-paced and On-the-Fly assessment.

The Quiz Builder tool allows you to create online assessments that you can use to test student comprehension or survey prior knowledge. You can search over 2,000 pre-made quizzes in the Quiz Library, choose individual questions from the Quiz Builder databank or write your own questions. Students access quizzes through the Student Center.

Google forms can simply be described as free, collaborative survey software. It records all

responses in Google Spreadsheets which is just one subset of the Google Docs applications and can be downloaded as a Microsoft Excel or Open Office file for further manipulation. To create a survey, or form, all you need is a Google account.

PPS is slated to roll out school division Google accounts in January. Please touch base with your TRT for updates.
