Updates & Reminders

Friday, April 19th is a student holiday/ teacher workday. School will be closed for students.
Kindergarten registration opened on April 8th. As part of registration, a mandatory in-person screening will take place at the school on Thursday, April 18th. Please call the school to make an appointment. More info on kindergarten registration can be found here.

Please turn in your Go Nuts For Reading book marks as soon as possible!
GCPS will host a public review period for math instructional resources being considered for grades 6-12. These resources will be available for any member of our community interested in reviewing materials from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mon-Fri or by appointment from April 22 through May 3 in the GCPS administration building at 2938-I River Road West, Goochland, Virginia.
April is Autism Awareness month! During the week of April 22nd- 26th we will have an Autism Awareness spirit week. See below for details.
Yearbooks are on sale until April 18th! The cost is $20. You can send cash or check (made out to Byrd) to the front office, order via OSP, or order here (code 10310624).

Go Nuts For Reading Program

At the beginning of March students received a bookmark when Nutsy from the Flying Squirrels came to visit Byrd. If students read eight books, then they can return the completed bookmark to school to receive a free ticket to a game on Wednesday, May 29th. Kids are invited to participate in a parade around the field prior to the start of the game. Families can purchase additional tickets for $10 a ticket through our school fundraiser site: https://fevo.me/bes2024. Last year the game sold out, so get your extra tickets early!

Please turn your bookmarks in by Wednesday of this week! More information will be sent home to families of students who returned completed bookmarks next week.

April is Autism Awareness Month

We will celebrate Autism Awareness month April 22nd- April 26th. We hope you will join us!

Miss Goochland Pageant 2024

The Miss Goochland Pageant will be held on Friday May 3rd, 2024 at 6pm. Those interested in participating in the pageant please fill out the google registration form found at tinyurl.com/missgoochland24. Registration and entry fees are due by Friday April 26th. Fees can be paid by cash or check made out to Goochland Middle School to the following people:

Spring Testing Reminders

The spring testing window is quickly approaching. Our 3rd through 5th grade students will take a variety of SOL tests to measure their growth throughout the school year. Below are some important reminders/tips and a copy of the spring testing schedule. If you have any questions, please email Madison Jackson at mjackson@glnd.k12.va.us

Reminders/Tips:

Testing can be a stressful time for our students and staff. Check out the posters below with some test-taking skills and coping strategies to help your student succeed!
Please ensure your student arrives at school on time. Testing starts around 8:30 each day and we want to ensure your student has plenty of time to complete the test.
Any students who arrive after the start of their scheduled test will have to make-up their test on another day.
Student's cannot be picked up early from a testing session once it has begun. If a student is picked up early, their test will be turned in as is and their score will reflect.

5th Grade Course Recommendation Sheets for Middle School

On 3/29/24, 5th graders were given paper copies of their rising 6th grade GMS course verification sheets to take home. Please review the courses your student has been recommended for, as well as their elective preferences. Please follow the instructions as given in the accompanying letter. If you need to turn in an override form, please return the completed form to your elementary school counselor so they can assist in getting them to the middle school. Thank you!

Community News

Feed More Food Bus

The Feed More Food Bus will be at the Goochland YMCA once a month on the advertised dates. The Food Bus will provide fruits, vegetables, and other food items for free to children in need.

The bus is only for children ages 6-18.
Children must accompany the parent/adult. Only children are allowed to go onto the bus to shop. Parents/adults will not be allowed on the bus.
The bus does not require any proof of income etc. to shop.

Please notify the office about transportation changes via email at: beseagles@glnd.k12.va.us.

If you have daily transportation needs, please make sure you provide changes at the beginning of each week for the entire week. This allows staff time to communicate all necessary changes and avoids confusion when a call is not received. We appreciate your support.

Parents who wish to chaperone a field trip or volunteer regularly in our school must submit to a background check every 2 years using the BIB portal. The process is completely electronic. If you are having problems with the system, contact Demetra Harris at dharris@glnd.k12.va.us.
