Sedro-Woolley Students Get Real-World Film Experience
Sedro-Woolley High School’s advanced filmography students and drama program participants had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity last weekend to take part in the filming of an independent movie right on their own campus!
Director Ty Minton, a Skagit County graduate, chose Sedro-Woolley High School as one of the filming locations for his latest project, Black Licorice, bringing Hollywood-style action to the local community.
Students had the chance to work as extras in the film, with several even landing speaking roles. Beyond being on camera, they also got hands-on experience behind the scenes, shadowing professionals from the film crew. Senior Dylan Alexander took on the key role of “clapper” for the day, a position responsible for marking scenes and ensuring smooth production. His outstanding work didn’t go unnoticed—he was invited back for another paid film shoot in Seattle later this year!
The day-long shoot lasted 13 hours, providing students with an immersive, real-world experience in the film industry. This unique opportunity served as an incredible learning experience for Career and Technical Education (CTE) students, reinforcing classroom lessons with practical, on-the-job training.
Having the chance to work on a professional set not only sparked inspiration but also helped students explore potential career paths in the entertainment industry. A big thank you to Director Ty Minton and his crew for offering our students a front-row seat to the magic of moviemaking!
Seventh Graders Embark on a Norse Adventure at Cascade Middle School
Seventh-grade history students at Cascade Middle School recently put their knowledge of Vikings and Norse mythology to the test in an exciting and immersive escape room experience. Under the guidance of teachers Rebecca Lewis and Brenna Zavala, students worked together to solve a series of clues and complete their Norse God Quest.
Their mission? To help Thor find his mighty hammer, Mjollnir, before the fearsome serpent Jormungand could destroy Asgard and the Aesir gods. Using their critical thinking skills, teamwork, and lessons from class, students searched for hidden clues, deciphered maps and symbols, and pieced together the puzzle to complete their quest.
The interactive activity not only reinforced their understanding of Norse mythology but also encouraged problem-solving, collaboration, and attention to detail. By following hints, carefully examining the room, and working as a team, students successfully cracked the codes and saved Asgard!
This hands-on approach to learning brought history to life, making the unit on Vikings an unforgettable experience for Cascade Middle School students.
Big Lake Elementary Hosts Exciting STEAM Convention
Big Lake Elementary School took its annual Science Fair to the next level this year by transforming it into a STEAM Convention, incorporating art into the mix alongside science, technology, engineering, and math. The event showcased an impressive array of student projects that blended creativity and scientific exploration, making for an engaging and educational experience for all who attended.
Students of all grade levels participated, submitting both science and art projects that demonstrated their understanding of scientific concepts. Many of the art entries cleverly incorporated science elements, resulting in unique and fascinating displays. On the night of the convention, students proudly presented their projects, explaining the scientific processes they had explored. Their enthusiasm and depth of knowledge were evident, impressing attendees and judges alike.
Judging this year’s competition was a panel of dedicated volunteers, including Krista Hynds, Big Lake’s former art teacher, as well as high school students and graduates from Sedro-Woolley High School. The judges used structured rubrics to fairly evaluate the projects and determine winners in two categories: Pre-K to 2nd grade and 3rd to 6th grade. Their assessment skills and commitment to supporting young learners helped make the event a great success.
Big Lake’s STEAM Convention is an annual event that students prepare for outside of school, demonstrating their dedication to learning and exploration. The school community looks forward to continuing this tradition and further inspiring students to develop a passion for science and the arts.
Thank you to all the students, families, and volunteers who made this year’s event such a memorable and enriching experience!
Good Beginnings Preschool Makes a Splash with Ocean Bash!
Good Beginnings Preschool students have been diving deep into the wonders of the sea as part of their Oceans Unit of Study. To celebrate all they have learned, the school hosted a lively Splish, Splash, Ocean Bash on Thursday, March 20th.
The event brought ocean learning to life with engaging activities, including special ocean-themed snacks, favorite ocean songs, and fun-filled games. Some families were able to join in on the excitement, making the celebration even more memorable for the young learners.
To accommodate all students, the Ocean Bash was held twice—once at 11:00 a.m. for the morning session and again at 2:15 p.m. for the afternoon session. Both sessions were filled with laughter, creativity, and plenty of splashes of fun!
Good Beginnings Preschool is proud to provide hands-on, interactive learning experiences that not only teach children about the world around them but also create lasting memories for students and their families.
Lyman Elementary School Garden Takes Root!
On Saturday, March 29, more than 30 parents and students came together to build the Lyman Elementary School Garden! Their hard work and teamwork have created a wonderful space for students to learn about gardening, sustainability, and the joys of growing their own food. Thank you to everyone who contributed their time and effort to make this project a success!
Mary Purcell Students Learn Business & Wildlife Lessons on March 28th
Mary Purcell Elementary had an exciting and educational day on March 28th, as students participated in two unique learning experiences.
Junior Achievement Day Brings Business Lessons to 4th-6th Graders
Volunteers from SaviBank visited Mary Purcell as part of Junior Achievement Day, sharing insights about the world of business. Fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade students learned about branding, marketing, and financial responsibility through discussions and activities. The volunteers helped students understand how businesses grow, how companies market their products, and the importance of making smart financial choices.
Wildlife Experts Teach Third Graders About Bears
Meanwhile, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife spent time with Mary Purcell’s third graders, presenting "Living with Bears in Washington." Students got an up-close look at furs, bones, and other fascinating artifacts while learning about bear behavior, conservation, and how humans can safely coexist with wildlife in our state.
Both visits provided hands-on learning opportunities that left students with a greater appreciation for business and nature. Thank you to SaviBank and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife for making this a memorable day at Mary Purcell Elementary!

What to Expect at Tryouts
Tryouts are a standard process across competitive soccer clubs and are required by Washington Youth Soccer to determine appropriate team placements. Northwest United’s tryouts include warm-ups, small-sided drills, and age-appropriate game play. Sessions last 90 minutes, and coaches evaluate players on technical, tactical, and physical abilities, as well as sportsmanship and effort.
Players should arrive 30 minutes early, check in at the Skagit River Park pavilion, and wear non-branded athletic gear. Shin guards are mandatory. Each participant will receive a numbered jersey for evaluation purposes.
Team Structure and Player Placement
Northwest United fields multiple teams at each age group depending on interest and skill level. Top players may be selected for ECNL-RL (Elite Clubs National League – Regional League) teams, which compete at the highest levels year-round. Premier teams also play in Washington’s highest-level leagues (RCL).
Within 48 hours of tryouts, families will be contacted with team offers. If a player is not placed on a team, other options include the SVSA recreational league and Northwest United’s NEXT GEN developmental program for younger players.
Additional Information
Scholarships are available to support players with financial need, and more details can be found on the club’s Parent Resource page. Registration costs vary by team.
Families who anticipate missing tryouts due to illness or unavoidable conflicts are encouraged to contact their age group’s head coach or director in advance.

Please note that CEP allows the service of one free breakfast and one free lunch meal daily. If students wish to have more than one meal per day, they will need to have money added to their food service account online or in the school office and will be charged accordingly. In addition, milk is an a la carte item. When taken by itself, the charge is $0.60. Students can get milk for free by ensuring they select a reimbursable meal, which can include a milk, fruit and vegetable. Students are not required to get the daily entrée.

**Please note that most youth sports are run by volunteer boards of directors. Coaches are most often fellow parents and there is a significant referee shortage amongst almost every sport. Volunteering to coach or training to become a referee is one of the best opportunities a parent or guardian has to stay involved in their child's life through various stages of development!
