Webster Weekly
November 17, 2023
WEbster Nation,
As this will be the final newsletter before the Thanksgiving break, I wanted to take a moment to reflect and focus on all there is to be thankful for this year.
I am thankful for the kindness of our tiny humans
I am thankful for such a dedicated and compassionate staff
I am thankful for parents who support us with love and energy
I am thankful for little hugs
I am thankful for hundreds of smiles each day
I am thankful for student curiosity, creativity, and wonder
I am thankful for donuts...just sayin'
I am thankful for a community that comes together for our students and staff
I am thankful for WEbster
I hope you will take a moment next week, and throughout the holidays, to slow down and find a place for gratitude. It makes for a brighter world.
Have a really wonderful break. Enjoy friends and family and any travel plans you may have. We look forward to having you back on November 27. Let's finish strong.
With gratitude,
- Tedd

TK began our Kindness Week embarking on a trip to Hawaii! We boarded the plane, stowed our luggage, and were greeted with flower leis and treats flown in from Pipeline bakery! Tedd began our adventure sharing deep sea diving stories and hammerhead sharks! TK continued on their Hawaiian adventure learning about baby sea turtles and their brave journey to the ocean, Hawaiian dancing, jelly fish, tides, and a grand finale of joyfully playing under a parachute! TK was living imaginatively and the day was MAGICAL! Mahalo!
Mrs. Berman and Mrs. Murdock's Kindergarten
This week the Bu Crew did a "deep dive" into our PBL Ocean. Since the beginning of the year, we have learned many things about the ocean and the creatures that call it home. But this week, our kinder marine biologists broke into collaborative learning groups to research animals on their own. The teams learned how to support each other's strengths and work together while using technology to discover new animals and learn more interesting facts about some that have already been studied. We can't wait to share all of our learning on December 15th at the Bu Crew Aquarium and Research Facility.
Mrs. Harris's 1st & 2nd Grade
Ms. Lockwood's 2nd Grade
Room 2 is Taking Action and Living Imaginatively this week! Students have been researching evidence supporting their opinion on whether zoos should exist or not. Students worked together to given their opinion with supporting evidence, creating a letter to send to a California state congressperson. It was an even split of opinions throughout the classroom, half said yes and half said no!
Mrs. Stark's 3rd Grade
Room 8 was lucky to be in the garden on Wednesday right before the rain came in. Ms. Justine taught us how to use a small ball of clay to make a seed ball. With the upcoming rain, these should sprout with some colorful flowers. Some of the kids chose to take their seed balls home. If your child brought theirs home, please help your child find a place to plant them and watch the seeds sprout.
Mr. K's 3rd & 4th Grade
Students spent some time this week preparing for the Deep Learning Expo with their "Taco Truck" build day. Design thinking, problem solving, creativity, and collaboration galore!
Mrs. Morris's 4th Grade
We are investigating different types of lava and trying to determine which type of volcano it might come from. Who knew that blowing bubbles into "lava" is an oddly satisfying experiment!
Ms. Johnson's 5th Grade
Hello Room 20 community! This week we learned about a new region of states and capitals, the Southeast region. For our Social Studies exploration project, we have been researching the best energy sources for our plot of land and how we could be using our land's natural resources to generate that energy. In ELA, we have continued to prepare for book club, which I am very excited to start. And finally, we discussed our class Friendsgiving which will be a fun and tasty potluck. I can’t wait for next week's fun, here is our question of the week (in honor of Anti-Hate Week).
What is one kind thing you did this week?
"During football someone got hurt and I went to help them out and make sure they were okay. Even though they were on the other team" - Preston G.
"I gave Mr. K a custom shirt that represented his hometown" - Dax W.
“I helped my little brother with his hw” - Naomi R.
“ I gave my brother some of my candy, because our older brother ate his” - Ronan VM
Room 20’s Star Author This Month: Andy Kessler
Mrs. London's 5th Grade
Hi Webster, this is Story, Room Reporter for Ms. London’s class! This week in Ms. London’s class, everyone finished their state web quest, where we all learned information about different states. We are also working on our Deep Learning Project. All of the teams are talking about and exploring what they are going to do with their landforms, and what type of energy might work best on their land, and why. We played a challenging game of dominos, where we reviewed different types of energy. Also this week, we made seed planets in Gardening Class, right before it rained. And in art, we made Flags of Tolerance in honor of building inclusion and kindness for United Against Hate Week.
A WEEK OF LOVE AND KINDNESS
During a beautiful kick-off on Monday morning, an energetic group of parents came out to welcome our Whales to school with messages of kindness and encouragement. Not a bad way to start the day and launch our "United Against Hate" week here at WEbster. As the week continued, we spoke a lot about kindness and acceptance, created some super cool chalk murals out on the yard, and wore our orange to represent unity and community. I'm so proud of our students for embracing the idea of standing up against hate in all it's forms and taking action toward a kinder, more respectful community.

INSPIRING ARTISTS
Thrilled to announce our Webster winners. These incredible artists have qualified to move onto the next level of consideration for the 2023 PTA Reflections Program. All of this year's entries were incredibly creative, thoughtful, and inspiring. We hope you will join us in the weeks to come where we will be displaying the work of all our artists. One of the highlights of this display is the chance to read their Artist Statement This is where students describe how their creation relates to the theme. This year's theme felt in alignment with the collective… I AM HOPEFUL BECAUSE...
A huge congratulations, not only to our winners, but to all students who took the time and energy to participate in this wonderful program. Truly inspiring!

DEEP LEARNING EXPO?
What is it exactly that we are celebrating at our Fall Deep Learning EXPO? Do you remember your childhood Science Fair? While many students certainly did their own work, conducted their own experiments, and should be proud of their efforts, far too often these events celebrated the wrong thing. They were driven by the perfection of the final product. On the day of exhibition, many students stood next to some unbelievable project with which they had little or nothing to do. Mom and dad were often the architects of these products because they knew it would be a big part of their child's grade that semester and they wanted them to look good in front of the rest of the school. Most students had a canned speech and rattled off a list of things they had prepared the night before. You remember?
Well...our EXPO IS NOT THAT.
It is instead a celebration of the process of inquiry and learning. It is an authentic opportunity for our students to discuss their struggles as well as their successes. It's a chance to highlight their curiosity and wonder and communicate to all of you the thinking and learning that came to light along the way. They are not receiving grades for these projects. Rather, they have received and will continue to receive formative feedback. In addition, they are developing the ability to provide constructive feedback to others. Will there be some imperfect results, some unfinished projects? Boy, I certainly hope so. Failure and discomfort are the most optimum places for growth...so long as students haven't learned to be terrified of them. We're all going to make mistakes and experience challenges along the path to design and collaboration. Let's teach kids to learn, improve, and grow from these experiences.
This is only our second attempt at this as a staff as well. Are there places where we can learn and grow and improve? For sure...and we will do exactly that in the months to come. But keep in mind that if we expect our students to take risks, try things, rise to challenges, and express creativity, then this process must become a foundation of our school culture for the adults as well. We must all participate and commit to the process of ideation, design, and reflection.
At Webster, we're going to take big swings, give kids real things to think about, real problems to solve, and challenge our staff to do the same. We're going to try things and reflect on the outcomes and be committed to growth mindsets. This is what the world is screaming for from our staff and students. So...when you come for our EXPO on December 15, @ 9:00am, you are coming to witness the continuance of something different...a more authentic exploration of learning. We are beyond excited to have you join us.
NOT JUST CLOWNING AROUND
VALUABLE MINDSETS
Room 8 spent time taking some of our Mindsets and developing language to help them better understand how these tools show up for them each day. We continue to find real value and opportunities for daily application. Our Mindsets help both students and adults in the community. Check out the student translations.
THE MONTHLY POTLUCK RETURNS
November's theme was "Tailgate Treats" and the team of Ms. Dayna, Ms. Neci, Mrs. Stark, Ms. Davida, and myself delivered a spread worthy of any football stadium parking lot. Hot soup, BBQ and buffalo boneless wings, homemade desserts, salad, pinwheels, and a make-your-own Triscuit bar were just some of our lunchtime highlights. The real winner, however, is building a little community among our staff and taking time out from our busy days to sit down and enjoy a meal together. Looking forward to continuing this tradition throughout the year!
WE'RE BACK!!

SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS
Several members of Webster's staff bounced up the street this week to support three of our own Webster thespians: Susannah Safai, J.D. Board, and Lyle Sokoloff. These students are performing in Pepperdine University's production of The Music Man, November 10-18. Joining them are recent Webster alums, Nicholas Board, Starr Safai and Rem Sokoloff. Music director for this amazing production is Webster parent, Ida Nicolosi. Ms. Johnson, Mrs. Stark, Mrs. London, Mrs. Harris, and Mrs. Cooper took time out of their busy week's to attend the show on Thursday evening. All reports were that our students, and the production in general, was truly magical. It means EVERYTHING to our students when their teachers come out to support them outside of school. If you haven't gone to see it yet, there is still time. Tickets are available here.

WAIT UNTIL 8TH
The Wait Until 8th pledge empowers parents to rally together to delay giving children a smartphone until at least 8th grade. By banding together, this will decrease the pressure felt by kids and parents alike over the kids having a smartphone. Please note that this pledge is for smartphones only! If you would like your child to have a basic phone that just calls and texts, you still can sign the pledge! The basic phone avoids many of the distractions and dangers of the smartphone.
Top 5 Reasons To Delay Getting a Smartphone
1 Smartphones are changing childhood.
2 They are distracting and addicting.
3 Smartphones expose your child to...
4 They increase risk for anxiety and depression.
5 Cyberbullying is an important concern.

In addition, we will value these traits in others and recognize outstanding efforts.
Every Friday we sport our Webster Wear to show school spirit and celebrate the coming weekend. Classes with the highest percentage of Webster Wear win the whale for the week. Be sure to show your spirit and pick up some Webster Wear in the main office when you stop in to say hello.
