Principal's Desk
Dear CMIT South Elementary Families,
As we begin this new month, I want to encourage both parents and students to embrace the spirit of learning and growth that defines our school community. Let this message of courage inspire us all as we navigate our educational journey together.

Counselor's Corner
As the winter months continue, we have noticed an increase in emotional regulation challenges among our students. The shorter days, colder weather, and limited outdoor activities can contribute to feelings of sadness, frustration, and anxiety. Seasonal depression, or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), is not just something adults experience—children can be affected as well. It’s essential that we provide them with the tools and space to manage their emotions in a healthy way. One great way to do this is by creating a Calming Corner at home.
What is a Calming Corner?
A Calming Corner is a designated space in your home where your child can go to regulate their emotions and practice self-soothing techniques. It is not a place for punishment but rather a supportive space to help them regain control when feeling overwhelmed.
Why is a Calming Corner Important?
Encourages emotional regulation and self-awareness
Provides a safe space for children to process feelings
Helps reduce tantrums, meltdowns, and frustration
Fosters independence in managing emotions
How to Create a Calming Corner at Home:
Choose a Quiet Spot: Find a small area in your home where your child can relax without distractions.
Add Comfortable Seating: A soft chair, bean bag, or cushions can make the space inviting.
Include Sensory Tools: Items such as stress balls, fidget toys, soft blankets, and calming jars can provide comfort.
Provide Emotional Regulation Resources: Books about feelings, deep breathing posters, and emotion charts can help children understand and name their emotions.
Encourage Mindfulness Practices: Teach simple breathing exercises, stretching, or listening to calming music to help reset their mood.
If you feel that your child is struggling with emotional regulation, please don’t hesitate to reach out for additional resources and strategies. By working together, we can create a supportive environment both at home and at school that fosters resilience, self-regulation, and overall well-being for our students.

Just as a reminder. Please remember to check your student's Canvas assignments and Synergy grades regularly. As they do complete work for grades in CARTS classes on Canvas.
Lego:
This week in Legos and Robotics, we continued to focus on strategies for problem solving. The students played various games individually and within groups. All of the games were math centered. The students enjoyed being a part of a group and employing strategy.
Makers Lab:
This week in Makers Lab, we focused on creating structures using just straws and a bit of tape. The challenge was to design stable frameworks that could hold cups filled with rocks. It was a fun and hands-on exercise that tested our creativity and problem-solving skills as we figured out how to balance weight and stability with such simple materials. The process of trial and error really helped us refine our designs and come up with some surprisingly sturdy structures!
Kindergarten started learning about the element of art, texture, through looking at various artworks and looking at the painting strokes of the artist Jackson Pollock! Texture means the way something feels or the way it looks like it should feel. Next week, they will be creating a texture painting. In the meantime, enjoy these action drawings!
