Spring parent teacher conferences will be held on Tuesday, March 12, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and will be live, in-person. Parents do not need to sign up in advance; arrive in the fieldhouse and visit with as many teachers as possible in the time allotted.

We need at least 300 more parents/guardians to participate in the state survey in order to remain compliant. Input is kept confidential and helps us understand our families and as we make decisions moving forward. The survey is offered in English and Spanish and will remain open through March 29.

Students still have time to sign up for this free, potentially life-saving EKG screening. Young Hearts for Life® (YH4L) will be at East Leyden tomorrow, February 27, and at West Leyden on Tuesday, March 5. These screenings are free and parent/guardian authorization will be required. Parents/Guardians must register their child in advance.

Parenting Your Young Child through Misbehavior, Meltdown and Tantrums - On Tuesday, February 27, Dr. Ann-Louise Lockhard will present two sessions via zoom at 12 p.m. and at 7:00 p.m.

The Eyes are Never Quiet: Listening Behind the Behaviors of Kids - On Thursday, February 29, Dr. Lori Desautels presents via zoom at 7:00 p.m.

Two athletes at Leyden are paving the way as the sport of wrestling gains in popularity with females. Zoey Dodgers and Sabrina Bono, who wrestle as part of the Leyden Varsity team, are joined by other females on the team at Leyden who are conquering challenges and breaking down barriers for themselves and for others in the future of the sport.

On March 5, the Chicago-O’Hare Rotary, in partnership with Leyden High Schools, will honor twelve students in its ninth annual Inspirational Eagle Awards. The purpose of these awards are to expand what is “typically” acknowledged in terms of academics, and instead to honor students for accomplishments in improving or maintaining academic excellence, attendance, behavior and overall citizenship. Congratulations Inspirational Eagles: Kareem Adbellatif, Jocelyn Delgado, Nicolle Cano Gomez, Jeremy Keathley, Owen Kelly, Danielle Legaspi, Eddy Martinez, Hector Morataya, Jared Rios, Yareliz Rodriguez, Jailene Villalpando, and Anthony Villalobos.

Six Leyden student musicians auditioned for the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) Midwestern Regional Honor Choirs. Of those six, Athiana Moran, Claudine Ricana, Cordell Orcullo and Nathan Pera were selected to perform in two different honor choirs at the 2024 American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) Midwestern Conference in Omaha, Nebraska earlier this month.

At their meeting last week, the Board approved the hiring of Jake Walker as the new music department chair and music teacher. Walker will fill the vacancy left by retiring chair, teacher and director Bryan Miller, who has served the students of Leyden for the past 30 years. Walker has served as the middle school band director in the Huntley School District and as the assistant band director at Crystal Lake South High School, and is pursuing his masters degree in wind band conducting at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
