St Bernadette's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 2 | WEEK 10 I 21 June 2024
Good afternoon, everyone.
The Year 5 and 6 Interschool Lightning Carnival was held yesterday and was enjoyed by all involved. Students formed either AFL, soccer, netball or volleyball teams and competed against a number of other primary schools in the local area across the day. St Bernadette’s students have much to celebrate and be proud of, not the least being our excellent sportsmanship. As the coaches of the footy team, Mr Hilton and I would like to sincerely thank all our team members for the way they supported each other, gave their very best effort and displayed a terrific attitude from start to finish. Other coaches reported the same from their team members also. Well done kids – a top effort! Many thanks to those parents who came along to cheer us on – your presence is always appreciated
Next Friday the 28th of June, marks the end of a week dedicated to highlighting and celebrating NAIDOC, week, Harmony Week and the importance of diversity, inclusiveness, and respect in our school, our community and society. Children will participate in a wide variety of cultural opportunities, including dressing up in cultural dress or the colour orange recognising Harmony Day, participating in Indonesian Market Day and classroom activities. St Bernadette’s warmly welcomes and celebrates families of all cultures in our school.
The 30th Rottnest Running Festival, raising money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, was held last weekend. The good news is that I managed to finish the 42.2km marathon run - the bad news is that I tore my hammy at the end of the 12km mark. Yes, not ideal and definitely not the plan! Old age? Bad luck? Not enough preparation you say? Probably a combination of all three factors contributed to my injury, however, it felt really good to challenge myself and to do something I really enjoy.two Rotto marathons, I’m setting my sights on a Half Ironman in December and half marathon, on flat ground, with no injuries next year!
While some amazing times and wins were made on run day, for my money, the runner who was the most impressive of all, was a guy called Daryl Howe. Daryl is a 46-year-old running legend, who has competed in well over 20 marathons and three ultra-marathons in cities across the world. A number of these runs have been on Rotto, which is well known for being one of the toughest courses around, with the windy weather conditions and relentless hills. Daryl also happens to have cerebral palsy, and when he was born, his parents were told that their son would never walk.
Daryl’s incredible determination, self-belief, and mental and physical toughness are pure inspiration, and his story is a really great one for our kids to reflect on for so many different reasons. I believe that his positive attitude and the amazing grit he modelled on the weekend and throughout his life, can’t help but inspire us all to make the most of what we have, to work hard to achieve our goals and to never give up, no matter the setbacks! In a world with so many bad news stories, seeking out the inspiring, uplifting, and heart-warming stories help us as parents, to teach our kids different perspectives, what really matters, and the importance of walking in the shoes of another.
I hope everyone has an awesome weekend, and I look forward to a fun and engaging last week of term.
