Why is it important for students to be at school and in class on time?
1. It Maximizes Learning: It ensures students don’t miss key parts of lessons and can participate fully.
2. It Boosts Performance: Regular attendance is linked to better grades and higher confidence.
3. It Reduces Disruptions: It prevents interruptions to the class and maintains a focused learning environment.
4. It Creates Belonging: It helps our students engage in social and educational activities from the start of the day.
5. It Fosters Responsibility: It encourages planning and time management, crucial for personal growth.
6. It Prepares for the Future: Sets expectations like those in college and the workplace, promoting readiness for future employment.
Late to School/Late to Class Information
On time to school means that students are in their 1st or 2nd hour class when the final bell rings at 7:35 or 8:35 (1st or 2nd hour). Starting Monday, Aug. 18th, we will begin tracking student “late to schools” if they arrive after the final bell rings at the start of the school day.
Students are given 4 tardies to each class each semester without penalty. On their 5th tardy, they will earn a 30-minute detention (served Tuesday or Thursday after school or Tuesday before school).
See the consequences below.
Consequences for Tardies:
The following progression of consequences will be observed each semester:
■ 5th tardy.............. 30-minute detention
■ 6th tardy ............. 60-minute detention
■ 7th tardy …………….1 hour 30-minute detention
■ 8th tardy……………. 2-hour detention
■ 9th tardy……………..In-School Suspension (ISS)
■ 10 or more………… Administrative Action
Car Loop & Student Safety:
Parents, as you drop off or pick up your student, please pull as far forward in the car loop as possible, to help keep the line moving forward. Thank you!
If your student drives themself home, please remind your student to use the sidewalks at BVNW to walk to their car. We have noticed many students walking straight through the car loop at the end of the day and we have stopped and diverted them back to the sidewalk.
PM CAPS Students & 3rd Hour AST:
If your student is in good academic standing, they are allowed to leave for their afternoon CAPS session when the bell rings to begin the Academic Support Time (AST) that follows 3rd hour. If they need to stay and work with a teacher, they are welcome to do so and they will have plenty of time to drive to CAPS. If you would prefer for us not to release your student at the end 3rd hour/AST, please contact your student’s alphabet administrator.

Parent Canvas Connection: Canvas is our learning management system for grades K-12. Do you need a refresher on it, are you looking to set up a new account or need to remember how to get added as an Observer to your student’s classes? We’ve got you covered!
*IMPORTANT!* Check out how to access or set up your Canvas Observer account as a parent, or review this Canvas Parent/Guardian Orientation. Remember, Canvas courses won’t appear until teachers publish them after the school year has started.
3-12th Grade Opt-In Option for Securly Filter: High Restrictions Filter Option
Parents/Guardians with "lives with" and "education rights" of 3rd-12th graders can choose between the default or high restrictions filter policy for their student(s). To learn the differences between the two, please view the Securly Opt-In High Restrictions Filter Policy documentation. The student(s) group filter policy will be applied to their 1:1 school issued computer and will be applied 24/7. Student(s) will remain in the default restrictions group unless a parent/guardian opts into the high restrictions policy. To place a 3rd-12th grade student in the High Restrictions Filter Group, parents should sign up here by August 31st.
High School: MFA Opt-In Option: Parents can opt-in their student for Multi-factor Authentication this Fall by signing up here. The link has information on what MFA is and instructions to sign up. All staff are already required to use it. The following year, 2024-25 this may become mandatory for all High School Students.
Increase in Student Chrome Tabs: Our district IT will increase the maximum number of Chrome browser tabs for students to 12 this year, up from the current 8.
Middle/High School Password Reset: Our district IT recommends that students change their password during the first month of school. Students can change their password by going to the Student Hub, where directions are provided in the Troubleshooting section.
Additional Technology Resources:
ORDER spirit wear; PREORDER Class tee shirts from The Dawg House!
The Dawg House is our student run school store at Blue Valley Northwest. In addition to spirit wear, BVNW novelty items, and optional PE uniforms, this website is where families can preorder class t-shirts for homecoming. It is a tradition to wear the grade's color during homecoming week. These class shirts are also a fundraiser for the classes.
All orders (aside from class shirts) will be packaged at the start of school and will be available for pick up by the end of August.
CLASS SHIRTS
Homecoming is approaching quickly. It is tradition to wear class shirts on one of the days during that week. Preorder your class shirts by Sunday, August 18th, to have them for Spirit Week! Shirts will be available for pick up the week of Homecoming.
Go to the School Store website HERE: https://bvnwdawghouse-553214.square.site/
Safety Expectations: Food Deliveries (ex: DoorDash, GrubHub, Uber Eats, etc.)
We began utilizing these procedures/guidelines during the 22-23 school year and and we will continue with them this school year.
Food delivery services create a disruption to the learning environment and pose a potential security concern. We will not accept meals delivered by paid delivery services during the school day for students. These deliveries will be refused.
For high school, we ask that students returning from appointments or CAPS/Career Ready Programs enjoy their food purchased off site before returning to the school.
Staff members will be able to order food for student clubs and groups with administrator approval. (Tight delivery protocols will be followed to ensure safety.)
