Book of the Month
One Crazy Summer
Eleven-year-old Delphine has it together. Even though her mother, Cecile, abandoned her and her younger sisters, Vonetta and Fern, seven years ago. Even though her father and Big Ma will send them from Brooklyn to Oakland, California, to stay with Cecile for the summer. And even though Delphine will have to take care of her sisters, as usual, and learn the truth about the missing pieces of her life. In Oakland, The Black Panthers become the backdrop for the narrative, and the sisters learn more about themselves and their communities than they could ever have anticipated.
Poem of the Month
Dream Variations by Langston Hughes
Dream Variations
1901 –1967
To fling my arms wide
In some place of the sun,
To whirl and to dance
Till the white day is done.
Then rest at cool evening
Beneath a tall tree
While night comes on gently,
Dark like me—
That is my dream!
To fling my arms wide
In the face of the sun,
Dance! Whirl! Whirl!
Till the quick day is done.
Rest at pale evening . . .
A tall, slim tree . . .
Night coming tenderly
Black like me.

Volunteers collected more than 14,000 pounds of trash. Also, he co-founded a nonprofit organization called The Clean Up Kids in 2019. Cash also met with many Tennessee State Representatives to make sure the government leaders were hearing his message and he wrote a book called, “One Small Piece,” which is about river pollution and tells people that kids shouldn't be underestimated.
