Reflecting on Semester 1 and Embracing the Opportunities of Semester 2
Talofa lava
As Semester 1 finishes and prepare to embark on the next leg of our academic journey with Semester 2, it is important we carry forward the lessons we have learned and the skills we have acquired. Let us approach the new semester with a renewed sense of curiosity and a commitment to excellence.
A reminder that study classes are available after school every Wednesday throughout Semester 2. These sessions will provide a valuable opportunity for students to seek additional support and collaborate with peers in a focused and supportive environment.
As we move into semester two together, let us remember the words of Nelson Mandela: "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." Each lesson learned, each hurdle overcome, brings us one step closer to realising our full potential and making a positive impact on the world around us.
I am excited to see all that we will accomplish together in Semester 2 and beyond. With hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to excellence, there is no limit to what we can achieve. Let us embrace the opportunities that lie ahead with enthusiasm and determination, knowing that our greatest successes are yet to come.
Here's to a term filled with excitement, discovery, and endless possibilities.

KO TE AKONGA KEI TE PITO - STUDENTS AT THE CENTRE
Mark your calendars and join us for an evening filled with culture, community, and celebration.
Puanga is a time of reflection, renewal, and celebration, and we can't wait to share this special occasion with all of you. Let's come together to honor the traditions of the past and embrace the promise of the future.
We look forward to seeing you at our Puanga Celebrations!
Puanga kai rau - The Abundant harvest of Puanga
This time is a chance to come together to reflect on the past year and to remember your loved ones. It is a time of wananga or learning, so as to set the path for the new year.
This year our Puanga Whakanui will be held in the evening from 5 - 7pm on Thursday the 20th of June. We warmly invite your whānau and hope this will allow all to come and join in the festivities with their child. This is an event for teachers and family to enjoy the celebration of Puanga with karakia, kura bands, Hāngi, fry bread, lights, activities, and merchandise. Organised and made by our talented students.
Māngai Whakatipu
Congratulations to Kiana Pull ( year 12) who has been selected to work for Māngai Whakatipu ( New Zealand/Aaotearoa Young Person Advisory Panel for Health) Māngai Whakatipu is a partner in the School Based Health Services Enhancement Programme that is currently underway by Te Whatu Ora. Kiana spent 2 days in Pōneke Wellington last week with other youth from all over the motu discussing ideas for improvements in how Secondary School health services are delivered. Well done Kiana.
Congratulations to Kyarne Broughton and Lydia Aldridge!
We are happy to celebrate the achievements of two of our outstanding Kyarne Broughton and Lydia Aldridge. Last month, Kyarne and Lydia were honored at the prestigious First Foundation Ceremony, marking a significant milestone in their academic journeys.
One particularly special moment of the evening was when Kyarne was invited to speak on behalf of the new scholars. Kyarne's speech was a testament to the hard work, dedication, and potential that both of these students have.
Please join us in congratulating Kyarne Broughton and Lydia Aldridge on this well-deserved recognition. Their achievements are a source of pride for our entire school community, and we look forward to seeing all the amazing things they will continue to accomplish.
Well done, Kyarne and Lydia! Keep shining and inspiring us all.
Rockquest Success!
We are thrilled to share the fantastic news from Rockquest! Our students made us incredibly proud with their outstanding performances.
Mason Horo-Maddaford and Grace Collins joined collaboration bands (Grellatron and Mondegreen) with students from other schools, showcasing their talent and teamwork. Their performances were well-received and demonstrated the high level of skill and creativity within our student community.
A special congratulations goes to our very own Spotswood College band, 'South Road,' who achieved an impressive 1st place among the 17 bands performing. This is a remarkable achievement, and we are immensely proud of their hard work and dedication.
Well done to all our talented musicians for representing Spotswood College with such excellence!
KO TE HAPORI TE MANAWA - COMMUNITY AT THE HEART
Student Referees Making a Difference in Local Primary Schools
Spotswood College is proud of our student referees' programme, where our talented young athletes are lending a helping hand to our local primary schools and Regional Sports Organisations. A strong mix of junior and senior students across the sports netball, football and rippa rugby; this group have made a real name for themselves over the last 3 years and are in demand almost every week.
These student referees are not only honing their officiating skills but also giving back to the community by providing valuable support during primary school sports events. From refereeing soccer matches to overseeing basketball games, our student referees are making a real difference in the lives of young athletes.
Their presence ensures fair play but also and serves as a source of inspiration for aspiring athletes. By seeing older students take on leadership roles, primary school children are motivated to excel in sports and strive for excellence both on and off the field.
We mihi to our student referees for their dedication and commitment to sportsmanship and community involvement. Their involvement in local primary schools is a great example of the positive impact that young people can have when given the opportunity to lead and serve others.
Fostering Empathy and Connection: Community Connect Class Crafts Teddy Bears for Local Primary School Students
In a heartwarming display of compassion and creativity, a Community Connect class embarked on a project to design and handcraft teddy bears, not just as ordinary toys, but as tokens of friendship and solidarity for students at a nearby primary school.
This initiative was more than just a class assignment—it was a lesson in empathy, teamwork, and the power of small acts of kindness. Assembled with enthusiasm and driven by a collective desire to make a difference.
The decision to gift the teddy bears to students at a local primary school was deliberate, with the class aiming to provide a source of comfort and companionship, as a symbol of support, reminding them that they are valued.
For the students of the Community Connect class, seeing the joy and gratitude on the faces of the recipients was a rewarding experience, reaffirming the importance of fostering stronger, more compassionate communities.
NGĀ PĀNUI HAKINAKINA - SPORTS AND CULTURAL BULLETIN
Tū Manawa
In the last round of Tū Manawa Funding, we were successful in getting a grant to purchase some new portable hockey goals. Much like our hockey team, these have been 5 years in the making, and it is awesome to see our young people out using these goals to be active and involved in sport again after a hiatus.
These have been purchased with our wider community in mind. To keep these goals out on the turf and available to all for use, please ensure that they are respected and looked after inside and outside of school hours when in and around our kura.
Taranaki Golf
With the rising popularity of golf amongst our young people, Spotswood College Sport is trying to utilise this growth and provide some golf playing opportunities in and around our community.
On Tuesday we were fortunate enough to have Lucinda Searle from Taranaki Golf in to run some sessions with our PE classes.
This was hotly contested as students attempted to chip into buckets, and drive the length of the top field.

Poly Club Leads Celebrations for Samoan Language Week: A Flavorful Journey of Culture and Community
In a vibrant celebration of culture and camaraderie, the Poly Club took center stage as they led the festivities for Samoan Language Week.
Samoan Language Week provided an opportunity for the Poly Club to showcase the beauty and significance of the Samoan language, a cornerstone of our cultural heritage. Through a series of engaging activities and presentations, they transported their peers on a journey of discovery, offering insights into the language's history, significance, and unique linguistic features.
However, the celebrations did not stop there. The Poly Club recognised that language is not only spoken but also experienced through the senses, and what better way to immerse oneself in Samoan culture than through its culinary delights? Thus, they organised a delectable Samoan kai fundraiser, inviting students and staff alike to indulge in a feast of traditional dishes lovingly prepared by members of the club and their families.
Beyond the culinary delights, the fundraiser also served a greater purpose, raising funds to support initiatives within the school and broader community. Through their efforts, the Poly Club demonstrated the power of cultural celebration as a catalyst for positive change, uniting individuals from all walks of life in a shared mission of generosity and goodwill.
The theme for Samoan language week this year was 'Tautua i le alofa, manuia le lumana’i – Serve in love for a blessed future
