30 September 2022 - Term 3 Week 10
From the Principal's Desk
Kia ora koutou katoa
Today is the final day of Term 3. Staff and students are tired and no wonder, when you look at what has been packed into the last two weeks of term: professional learning for staff, Year 12 Titration, Shakespeare festival, Netball prize giving, Rugby prize giving, Year 11 Geography field work, Year 6 visit from Edendale and Wyndham Primary, Whanau conferences, Student Council meetings, assembly, Board of Trustees student representative elections, after school clubs, lunch time Volleyball, staff verses student Volleyball match and a Board of Trustees meeting. All of this is on top of normal teaching and learning.
Next term will be just as hectic with only three weeks before seniors leave for exams. Staff and students deserve a good break, a chance to relax and recharge batteries. This needs to be balanced with preparation for senior exams. Those who fail to plan, plan to fail. Senior students who are sitting exams should have a study timetable with planned revision time for each paper they are sitting. A quiet space and undisturbed time to go over notes and practice previous papers will go a long way to help students achieve results they can be proud of. Senior students who require more credits to gain their NCEA level certificate will have further learning opportunities provided while others are on study leave.
Thank you to the Coaches, Managers and Administrators who have given so much of their free time to ensure that our students have been able to once again enjoy a full winter sports season.
Good luck to the Trap Shooting team of Paige Loveridge, Alex Smith, Bridget Scobie, Ben McLellan and Brenton Maxwell who are competing at the South Island Secondary Schools Clay Target Shooting competition in Christchurch. This is under the tuition of Warren Ayers and management of Katrine Smith.

Last week we held our second ever Shakespearean Feast. It was amazing! The costumes, the feasts, the plays - all spectacular. Definitely a step-up from last year. We had another good range of plays showcased: Othello, Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth and it was fantastic to see so many students involved in this process. From the back-stage helpers to the actors who braved their nerves and delivered some lovely performances; you all played an important role in the success of our day.
We're already really looking forward to the 2023 version of our Shakespearean Feast!

Mathematics Department
On Wednesday 28 September Year 7 to 10 students from Menzies competed in SMAC, the Southland Mathematics Association competition. Students work in teams of four to answer as many problem solving type maths questions as they can in 20 minutes. All schools from Southland are represented and the competition is intense.
Due to Covid SMAC has been cancelled for the past two years so for many students this was a new experience. Although none of the Menzies teams were top three finishes, the students did incredibly well and finished mid field. We are very grateful to the parents/caregivers who provided transport to Southland Girls' High where the event was held.
The following students competed:
Year 10 - Alyssa Ozar, Ruby Ritani, Daisy Stewart, Dante Dickson, Amy van der Straaten, Anna McMullen, Kimberly McDonald, Benjamin Laurie
Year 9 - Elise Knapp, Jessica Dodds, Maddison Elliott, Nicholle Bedrijo, Dante Dickson, Danyon Ashman, Cooper Kennedy, Tom Blackmore
Year 8 - Sophie Geary, Emily Paterson, Jacob Stuck, Ellie McKelvie, Maddix Dickson, Sophie Frantz, Charlie Blackmore, Tom Blackmore
Year 7 - Kadence Hunter, Zoe Muir, Nadine Abella, Wylie Clarke, Beau Pemberton, Lila Cabrera, Jesse Howe

LMV Clubs
A big thank you to 40 of our students for giving up their time after school to help at Clubs this term. For the last six Thursdays, we have had over 60 primary students from our contributing schools rotate around our Science and Technology learning areas working with our students and teachers. All students had a lot of fun and hopefully have learnt something along the way. We look forward to doing it all again next term.

Year 12 Titration Days
On Tuesday and Wednesday last week the Year 12 Chemistry class learnt how to complete a titration to find the concentration of an unknown. I was impressed with how quickly and confidently students supported each other to learn the processes to gain great results.

Quad planters for Science Quad
The Science Department would like to acknowledge and thank Triflor for their generous donation of bulb crates and pallets and Fonterra for donating additional pallets. We are planning to create planting spaces and furniture for the area outside the labs for students to use in our new courses in the future. We would also like to thank Nathan at Wyndham Freight for transporting these resources from Triflor for us.
Simon Pearce and the students in the BCITO course have already converted the crates into eight planters and next term they will be making furniture from the pallets. A big thank you to them also for their hard work and we look forward to seeing all students utilising and benefiting from these assets.

Ski Weekend
A fabulous team of 63 Menzies students went away for a weekend of fun at The Remarkables from 16-18 September. We stayed in Arrowtown and travelled to the field each day. We had fabulous weather and everyone had a great time. This weekend couldn't happen without the support of the teachers and whanau which helped make this trip such a success. A special thanks to Active Southland Tu Manawa Active who provided funding of $10,000 to help support a group of 30 students to attend.

Wyndham Pioneer Lions Club Recycling
The Wyndham Pioneer Lions collect many things that raise money for the underprivileged and disadvantaged but we can do more with your help.
Tear tabs from aluminium cans and wine bottle tops raise funds for ‘Kidney Kids’.
Glasses (both reading and sunglasses) and hearing aids are distributed in places like the Pacific Islands, improving the quality of lives who cannot afford such ‘extravagances’.
Aluminium cans and cardboard are collected by The Pakeke Lions in Gore.
If you can help it would be appreciated if you could take them to Menzies College or contact
