TECHNOLOGY CAMPUS CHRONICLE
May 10th 2024
PRINCIPAL CORNER
Dear OSES families,
As we approach Mother’s Day, we want to take a moment to honor and celebrate the incredible women who play such an essential role in our students’ lives. Moms, grandmothers, aunts, and all mother figures deserve our heartfelt appreciation for their unwavering love, support, and dedication.
On this day, we celebrate their selfless love, sacrifices, and tireless efforts. They are our first teachers, our biggest cheerleaders, and our forever friends. Whether it’s a comforting hug, a late-night chat, or a warm meal, moms are always there, making our lives brighter and better.
Remember, Mother’s Day isn’t just another day on the calendar—it’s a chance to celebrate the love, sacrifice, and strength of these remarkable women. Let’s make this Mother’s Day memorable for all the moms in our Orlando Science family!
“To describe my mother would be to write about a hurricane in its perfect power. Or the climbing, falling colors of a rainbow.” –Maya Angelou
Wishing you a day filled with love, laughter, and cherished moments.
Principal.

It's been another fantastic week as we explore and discover together! Our little learners are getting ready for our STAR tests by revisiting what we've learned each day and having fun with Kahoot quizzes ✨ Plus, we're thrilled about our new milkweed plant! Students will get to witness the magical transformation of caterpillars into butterflies right here in our classroom. It's going to be a thrilling end to an incredible school year 💜
FIRST
Nickerson
We can’t believe it is almost the end of First Grade for our students! We continue to engage in many learning activities as the school year ends.
This week in Ms. Nickerson’s class, students completed their Mother’s Day crafts to take home over the weekend. We’ve worked on this diligently week after week to make it as perfect as possible. We hope all recipients enjoy this surprise gift!
We have themed day coming up for the last week of school, please be sure to watch out for communications from your students’ teacher about any upcoming events for the final weeks of school.
Also, on behalf of all First-Grade teachers, thank you all for the wonderful tokens of appreciation this week for Teacher Appreciation Week. The love you and your students have shown us is immeasurable and we greatly appreciate everything you have done for us!

SECOND
Yeaman
This week in second grade we completed our STAR reading assessment! We worked really hard this year and grew so much as learners! In science we finished up our Bioengineering project. We learned about the habitat in Brazil and the skin of a frog and how they work together to keep the frog wet. As a group we created a model membrane. The goal was to help a frog get enough water to stay hydrated but not too much so that it got too much water. We really enjoyed the project and the opportunity to learn about what Bioengineers do for a living.
We are still working hard in math and preparing for our final Math STAR assessment. We are spending these last few weeks of school previewing the math standards that we will get to learn next year! We are also very much looking forward to Field Day and other end-of-the-year activities.
Congrats Aadit for your performance in the Kangaroo math competition!! He placed 4th in our state and a national rank of 19! Way to go!
THIRD
Martin
This week in 3rd grade we’ve reached the tests we have worked toward all year. We reviewed in Mr. Martin's class on the days leading up to the tests and celebrated afterwards. With this week of testing concluded there's a lot of enjoyable tasks left this year.
Myers
Ms. Myers class had a soap box derby this week.
FOURTH
Blaske
The fourth graders are enjoying the ABC Countdown to the last day of school. On Monday, students brought in flashlights to work in the dark on Lights Out Day. We saw some interesting outfit choices on Mismatch Day. The students chose their own unique nicknames for Nickname Day. Order of Operation Day took place on the day of the Math Fast test. Today the students wore pink for Pink Day. To add to "P" Day my students also paper planes. On Monday we will see who is the quietest 4th grader on Quiet Day!
FIFTH
Kaljulaid
Fifth graders were busy this week putting everything they've learned this year to the test. Thank you to families for making sure they slept well, ate breakfast, and were on time. Fifth graders, great job on giving it your all for each of the three tests. We are so proud of all that you've accomplished this year. This week two of the fifth-grade classes have buddied up with second grade classes to participate in STEM buddy activities. The remaining classes will participate next week.

Character Education - Bagnati
This past semester in Character Education, students have been busy working on projects and learning various topics. In Kindergarten and 1st Grade, students have been learning about different emotions and character traits that go along with the emotions. In 2nd Grade, for the past month or so, students have been learning the four steps of problem solving when a conflict occurs. 3rd grade recently finished their unit on bullying and created a bullying mural with compliments about their peers. They are currently learning about conflict. 4th and 5th grade are wrapping up their projects on conflict resolution. It has been fun seeing all the creative projects!
As a reminder, an email was sent home recently asking for permission for students to watch a movie with me for their last class (if they had Character Education this semester). Another email was sent home to some classes asking for popcorn donations. Please look out for any emails sent by Ms. Bagnati!

Lynx Campus 24-25 Summer Reading List
Dear Parents/Guardians,
We’re excited to share our Summer Reading list for the 2024-2025 school year. We continue to adjust the program to give students the best experience while upholding the desire to turn them into life-long readers. We know that people who read are more successful in all spheres of life, and we want to give your child her/his best opportunity to be successful both here at OSS and beyond. On the other side of this sheet, you’ll find the summer reading lists. Note that you do not need to purchase copies of these books, and the only summertime requirement is their selected book is read before the first day of school. It is highly recommended that students complete the project attached to this letter upon completion of reading, as information will be fresh in their minds, but the project will be due 8/30/24. Students will not be given time in their ELA class to complete the project.
A note on the books assigned for Summer Reading: We know that there are some difficult ideas in the books we’ve assigned. We know that there are events and language that you may question, albeit very minimal. We want you to know that we don’t assign these texts lightly or without serious consideration about what is best for your student and their educational future. It is our job and our privilege to prepare your student for what lays ahead, both in their education and in their future. We have carefully selected each text we’ll encounter this year based on age-appropriateness, complexity, thematic content, and an awareness of what we know higher educational institutions will expect they’ve been exposed to.1 There is a certain canon of literature that students must be familiar with upon graduating from middle school, and we work very hard to balance that with the literary appropriateness of each piece selected.
More than that, however, we also believe in the power of literature to encompass the human experience in a way that not only enlightens us but that connects us to the great, wide world around us. We believe that literature faces the human experience without flinching and that some of that experience is difficult. That being said, we don’t intend to let your student float through these texts without guidance and help, and we know that they will have the opportunity to emerge on the other side with deeper insight, more compassion, a better understanding of themselves and the world around them.
We hope that, at the end of their time at OSS, all our students leave with a deep love of the English language and for the stories that connect us. We hope that they are more compassionate, thoughtful, and intelligent people. We hope that they will develop wisdom and the ability to look beyond the surface of a thing to see its deeper truths, whether that “thing” is a book, a political situation, or another person. We hope that they are wise and just and true in their dealings with the world, and we know that great literature can help them to become all those things. We thank you for entrusting them to us, and we thank you for your support as we guide them through these literary encounters, even those that may not make immediate sense to you. We also welcome your feedback and conversation.
Sincerely,
The OSS ELA Department

Ms. Bravo
Hello! Here at school, we have been very busy learning about perseverance– what it means, and how we can practice it. Learning happens best when it is done both at school and at home. Below are many ways that you can help your child continue to learn about the theme of perseverance through reading about it, talking about it, and practicing it.
Practice It!
Help your child learn to persevere by engaging in difficult tasks with them.
Work on a large puzzle, or learn and perfect a new skill, etc...
Find something to do together and commit to pushing each other through the challenge.
Having a Growth Mindset helps me learn!
Have a fantastic weekend!
