A Note from Your Counselor
The school year has come to an end and students may be spending more time online. Although the internet can offer a plethora of educational opportunities and positive experiences, how can parents help children enjoy the benefits of using the internet while avoiding the bad parts? Continue reading for a couple of tips:
- When children are using search engines, make sure parents are involved. Search engines don't filter information as a parent would.
- Teaching children about what sites to visit and what sites not to visit is always a good idea however as a parent, I can attest to the fact that despite our best efforts, it may be impossible to protect children from seeing inappropriate things. Teaching your child about what to do if they come across something inappropriate is a way to empower and protect them.
- Teach your child not to share personal information online such as their age, name or address. If an app or website request camera permission, make sure it is a reputable educational source.
- Although parents may want relatives and friends to see pictures of their children online, research has shown that many kids wish parents would ask their permission prior to doing so. Asking kids for permission to share their photos online shows respect and it can also make them more aware of what they share online and the possible consequences.
- Children may not be able to tell the difference between an advertisement and other content, parents make sure to limit their ability to make in-app purchases.

Teaching Children about Race and Diversity
One of the most important tools to teach children about important issues are books. Check out this article featured on the pbs.org website to read as a family and encourage discussions about race and diversity.

Wash your hands often
Make sure you wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available use hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
Avoid close contact
Avoid close contact with people if they are sick even if they live inside your home. Put distance between yourself and others outside of your home. Remember 6 feet!
Cover your coughs and sneezes
You can spread COVID-19 even if you do not feel sick. If you do not have a face covering, remember to cover your mouth and and nose when you cough or sneeze with a tissue or use the inside of your elbow.
Throw the tissue away and remember to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds.
