Measurement Unit!
This week we have started our unit on Measurement. In this unit we will focus on three main topics:
-Height and Length (Chapter 9)
-Weight (Chapter 10 book 1B)
-Graphs (Chapter 11 book 1b)
After each of the three topics, the students will take a quiz! We will be focusing on the vocabulary words associated with each, estimating, collecting data, and making logical connections to the real world! This is a very hands-on unit for the students, and one that many enjoy!
Height and Length:
We have started to investigate length and the students are quickly grasping the concept. This upcoming week, we will start measuring height and length with non-standard units (paper clips, cubes, pencils, etc.). We will also learn how to use a ruler and collect data. Some of the skills your child will practice are:
- Comparing lengths using the terms tall/taller, long/longer, short/shorter, tallest, longest, and shortest
- using a common starting point when comparing heights
- measuring lengths using non-standard units
Have your child measure different household objects at home and compare them. Ask them some questions about the objects and what conclusions can they make about what they found! Have fun!! :)
