Talented and Gifted (TAG) Testing 23-24
On Tuesday, October 3rd, all 3rd grade students in Beaverton will be administered the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) Screener. This 30-minute test measures students’ learned reasoning abilities through verbal/picture analogies, number analogies and figure matrices.
Currently the main purpose for administering the CogAT is to identify students for TAG in the area of intellectual ability. Students who score at the 97th percentile or above on the CogAT screener will be invited to test with the full version of the CogAT that is used for potential TAG identification. The full version of the CogAT will be given in November. For more information about testing, please contact your school’s TAG facilitators, Celena Rosenberger or Bettina Curl.
5th grade families can request that their student take the CogAT Screener by completing this link. All nominations must be in by Sept. 28th. No late submissions will be accepted.
Social Emotional Learning
Dear Family,
This is a busy time for our children as they continue to learn many new skills at school. One area of learning that requires specific skills is social-emotional learning (SEL). These important skills are often overlooked. This is the realm where children learn how to understand and manage their feelings, how to make friends and be a friend, and how to solve social problems. Learning takes place throughout the day—in the classroom, on the playground, and at home. Children learn by watching and listening to how teachers, family members, and friends interact with one another.
We will be using a curriculum called the Kindness in the Classroom® to help us think about, develop, and practice positive social skills. Research tells us that children who learn and use these skills are more likely to get along with others and do better in school. To clarify, this is not a bully prevention program. Rather, it is a pro-social approach to teaching students the skills needed to better communicate and collaborate, advocate for themselves and actively call out positive behavior and actions when they see it happening.
The Kindness in the Classroom® program includes 6 kindness concepts focusing on responsibility, respect, caring, inclusiveness, integrity, and courage. The lessons give students the opportunity to be inspired, feel empowered, act on what they’ve learned, reflect and share with their peers.
The first concept we will focus on in our Kindness in the Classroom program is Respect.
Q: What is Respect?
A: Respect is treating people, places, and things with kindness.
Discussion questions for families:
Q: What are some ways you showed respect to people, places or things today?
Secure Drill 10/3
We like to provide social stories, which are visual stories to help teach students about secure drills before they occur. This is so that students can be prepared for what to expect. Teachers will go over this in their classes prior to the drill on 10/3.
Standards-Based Grading
What is Hispanic Heritage Month?
Hispanic Heritage Month is recognized from September 15th-October 15th. It is a time to recognize and celebrate the many contributions of people from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
Why do we celebrate it?
September 15th is a meaningful date because it is the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16th and September 18th. We take time in September and October to celebrate Latinx changemakers past and present. This learning continues all year long!
Family discussion questions:
What can you do to learn more about the contributions of Latinx individuals?
Why is it important to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month?
Meals and Snacks-Repeat
If your child will be purchasing lunch, there are two ways to add money to your account: 1) pay at school; cash or checks are accepted in the school cafeteria or 2) pay online. SchoolCafé can be used for online payments. There’s a small fee for using SchoolCafé to make deposits.
How much does breakfast and lunch cost?
Breakfast costs $1.65; lunch costs $3.05.
How do families apply for free or reduced-cost school meals?
If you believe your student qualifies for free or reduced-cost meals, please visit the Meal Benefits webpage to apply.
How are food allergies handled?
Please be sure to notify our school nurse, Carey Stephens at carey_stephens@beaverton.k12.or.us. She will create a Student Health Plan that will put a flag in our system to alert the cafeteria staff that there is a food allergy. Additionally, we have allergy tables in our cafeteria that students can sit at. Please notify your classroom teacher if your child has a food allergy and needs to sit an an allergy table. Thanks!
Dietary Restrictions-
All entrees in our cafeteria will be labeled as pictured below. If your child has special dietary needs such as the need to choose only vegetarian items, please help teach them to look for the green V as pictured as above.
