August Board of Education Notes
August 2023
Meeting Recap
The District 146 Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting on Monday, August 14 at the Robert Procunier Administration Center. Superintendent Dr. Jeff Stawick reported:
- The first day of school for students is Wednesday, August 23.
- Staff return to their buildings on Monday, August 21 for a School Improvement Day.
- Tuesday, August 22 is the Welcome Back Ceremony for staff and will include the Keynote by Dr. Stawick along with service awards.
- Induction and Mentoring Week began on August 8 and will run through August 15. The District's new certified staff members participate in this orientation.
- Training days for paraprofessionals will be held on Tuesday, August 15 and Wednesday, August 16.
- A list of Board Meeting Dates for this school year, along with the updated locations, was shared.
- American School Bus, our general education transportation service, has informed the District that as of right now, our bus routes are fully-staffed with no double routes.
- The District received a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). This is the highest recognition in government accounting and financial reporting. The District has been honored by GFOA for many consecutive years.
- The District participated in Tinley Park Police Department/Tinley Park's National Night Out, greeting and distributing information to hundreds of community members.
- Wendy Wolgan, Curriculum Director, successfully defended her dissertation last week and earned her Doctorate. The District congratulates Dr. Wolgan on this accomplishment.
- Dr. Wendy Wolgan, Director of Curriculum explained that the updated standards-based report card for kindergarten through grade 5 is being finalized. Information has been posted on the District website, with additional resources to come.
- Director of Buildings and Grounds Matt Shanahan gave an update on the Kruse and Fierke HVAC projects. The work is being finished and will be will be completed prior to the beginning of school. Some work at Kruse was delayed by one week due to production issues. Mr. Shanahan commended the custodial staff for their hard work, and the teachers for their patience in getting into their classrooms.
- Vern Bettis, Director of Technology, informed the Board that a new phone system, with 350 new phones, has been installed throughout the District. In addition, the new wireless network has been completed. The wireless project was completed in three phases and spanned three summers. Mr. Bettis also said screens and projectors have been installed in the Media Centers at Fierke and Kruse. All four elementary school gymnasiums also had large screens and projectors installed.
- The teachers union president said staff are looking forward to the beginning of the school year and welcoming back students.
- The ESP union president said members are ready for the upcoming training. They are excited about seeing their students again and the beginning of the school year. The District is still looking for a few more paraprofessionals for the school year.
- A presentation of the preliminary Fiscal Year 2024 budget by Jeff Charleston, Director of Finance.

Next Board Meeting
The next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, September 11, 2023. The September meeting will be held at Kruse Education Center, 7617 Hemlock Drive in Orland Park.

The Open Meetings Act requires school district to give notice of the dates, times, and locations for regular meetings at the beginning of each calendar or fiscal year. The schedule should also be generally available.
