Student Column: Why Reading is Important at a Young Age
By: Zoe Powell, CCS Junior
Imagination is something every kid has had at least once in their life. Imagination comes in different forms, such as, movies, and playing pretend. Books are an amazing way to use your imagination because they give you a verbal message that you can form pictures in your mind however you want and you don't have anyone telling you what exactly you have to see and exactly how to see it.
Books are important because they encourage curiosity and creative thinking in kids that they carry with them through adulthood. Literacy in children is extremely important not just for enjoying books, but for reading comprehension and understanding contexts, as well as improving vocabulary and grammar skills. In America, the
Most kids today would much rather be on technology like ipads and phones, and while those things can inspire creativity, reading books gives you the freedom of forming your own thoughts and ideas. Technology now, spoon feeds people and kids’ thoughts and doesn’t allow them to form their own opinions.
There are many opportunities for reading. Many schools have a book club or a reading challenge that encourages kids to get more into reading and expand their imagination that continues through adulthood.
In conclusion, reading is extremely important for kids because of the creativity and personality it creates in them. The comfort of just reading and imagining yourself as an antagonist who saves the world or a queen or king of a kingdom caan make them confident in who they are and possibly inspire the jobs they want to do. That is why books must be shared.
Happenings from the Week
Activities at Depot
The upper school students are loving the facilities at the DC Student Center at Depot Park! Each day they get to play pickleball, basketball, ping-pong, chess, and hang out in the coffee shop during break and lunch times.
Peer Reading
Students are working on their reading skills every day! Sometimes they even help each other practice and get in on the fun of read-alouds in front of their peers.

In Good Company
It's not uncommon to see CCS students smiling, laughing, and having fun together! Enjoying time with friends and feeling loved makes all the difference in the world. We love seeing them grow and learn together, not only academically, but socially and emotionally.
Lobster Cookie Treat
Lower school teachers got a sweet surprise this week from Darius' sister who is an incredible cookie maker. These CCS Lion Lobster cookies were super cute and delicious! Thank you Kaitlynn's Cookies!
Handy Helpers
Several of our Juniors and Seniors help at the lower school on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. There is always a project to work on. This week they assembled a locking cabinet for the upper school office.
Reading Models
Students in Mrs. Robertson's upper school Children's Literature class are getting ready to start reading to the younger students. They have been reviewing books, discussing selections, and practicing to model reading for elementary students. This course has not only proven to be fun, but also a great way to help students search for good, uplifting books.
Coach Tetro Teaches at Chapel
This Thursday the upper school students heard a great message from Coach Tetro. He talked to students about finding their identity in Christ and serving Him.

Lobster Shirts
CCS has a new gym floor! The floor was previously owned by the Maine Celtics, a feeder team to the Boston Celtics. Their logo, which is still on the floor until refinishing, is a giant green lobster.
Our CCS mascot is still a LION, and the lobster will soon be gone, but we think it's fun to embrace it for just a little while. After all..... the Crimson Tide has an elephant, the Auburn Tigers have an eagle, so why can't the Cullman Christian Lions have a lobster?
Just for fun and to commemorate this event, for a limited time, CCS Lobster T-shirts will be available for $15. Order online at https://www.cullmanchristian.org/spiritwear
CCS Caps
The Archery Team is selling CCS caps for $25. Contact Mrs. Nikki Ayers to order.
