Phalen Virtual Leadership Academy
"Bytes" From Your School Leader, Dr. Townsend
March 15, 2024
Greetings Phalen Virtual Leadership Academy Families,
Happy Friday! Happy Women History Month! What a wonderful Week 32 at PLA Virtual!
A special thank you to ALL families who registered and were in attendance today for Parent Teacher Conferences. If we did not hear from you, please check your email, as we sent private messages as our goal is to connect with every family. Our partnership is critical for your scholar's success.
We finished out all of our make-up IRead and SAT testing this week. Thank you for ensuring your scholar was present and ready for the mandatory Indiana State testing sessions. Our next mandatory testing sessions, MWEA, ILEARN and Biology will begin the week of April 15, 2024 a short while after we return from Spring Break.
We are officially in Quarter 4, the last home stretch until the end of the year. The weather is getting warmer, we have sunlight longer, and the temptation to be outside is more tempting. Please be sure your scholar is logged in, and stays logged in daily to finish the school year strong.

We look forward to seeing your scholar(s) on Monday, March 18, 2024 at 8:35am in class or your for Week 33 at PLA Virtual!
With Gratitude,
Dr. Townsend, Principal

Poor Attendance Is The Post-Pandemic Epidemic!
Students who are chronically absent are at higher risk of falling behind, scoring lower on standardized tests and even dropping out. And as often happens in education, students who struggle with attendance are also more likely to live in poverty, be children of color or have disabilities.
3 years since the pandemic wrecked attendance, kids still aren't showing up to school.
In a survey of 21 school districts in rural, suburban and urban areas, it was found that most districts still had heightened levels of chronic absenteeism.
Before the pandemic, about 8 million U.S. students were considered chronically absent (that's when a student misses 10% or more of the school year) By spring 2022, that number had doubled to around 16 million.
