Lasting Influences
Black History Month
February is Black History month. Valley Center High School is proud to pay attribute to influential African Americans who have or currently are paving the way for a brighter future for our students.
Doug Williams - Super Bowl Winning Quarterback
In 1978, Williams was selected 17th overall in the NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, becoming the first African American quarterback to be picked in the first round. During his five years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he led the team to the playoffs three times. Williams decided to the leave the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1983 to join the newly-formed United States Football League. After the United States Football League folded in 1985, Williams was recruited by the Washington Redskins the following year as a backup quarterback to Jay Schroeder. In the subsequent 1987 season, Williams replaced Schroeder as the starting quarterback. He then led the team to Super Bowl XXII, in which the Washington Redskins defeated the Denver Broncos 42-10. Williams, the first African American starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl, was named MVP with 340 passing yards and 18 of 29 passes completed. In 1989, Williams retired from the NFL and went on to coach at several schools at the high school and college level, including Northeast High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; the U.S. Naval Academy; and Morehouse College. In 1998, Williams succeeded his former coach Eddie Robinson as the head football coach for Grambling State University, a position he held until 2003 and again from 2011 to 2013. In 2017, Williams was named the senior vice president of player personnel for the Washington Redskins. He also served as a personnel executive for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Excellence in the Classroom
Walking in the Shoes of our Students
On January 23rd, during our Early Release Day, our teachers participated in an activity called, "Walking in the Shoes of our Students." This activity had our teachers go through a 5 period "day" after school where they sat in the desks of students and participated in 5 different engaging activities by their colleagues. The purpose of the exercise was to not only have our teachers experience, even in a small way, life as a student but also learn from each other the various ways in which their colleagues engage their students in their content area. Below are pictures of our teachers being asked to utilize the vertical whiteboards that are used in our various math classes.
Learning Sustainability in AP Spanish
In Mrs. Rincon's AP Spanish class, students learned about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.
Groups of two created a Google slide presentation to inform their classmates about the facts, goals and ways in which each one of us can be part of the solution to the challenges that affect our world.
There are 17 goals that all United Nations Member States share and "are an urgent call for action", among them are: 1-No Poverty, 2-Zero Hunger, 3-Good Health & Well-Being, 4-Quality Education, 5- Gender Equality, 6-Clean Water & Sanitation, 7- Affordable & Clean Energy, 8-Decent Work & Economic Growth, just to name a few.
Spanish II students are learning about sports and leisure activities, so they prepared a bilingual presentation to talk about a famous athlete of their choice. They shared a brief biography, accomplishments and the attributes needed to be successful.
Figurative Language with Mrs. Villalobos
Students in Mrs. Villalobos' classes were asked to create unique videos to explain various forms of figurative language. Creations included caricature videos of students talking about cliche, oxymoron, and a spot-on impersonation of Steve Harvey and Family Feud where they discussed hyperbole and more.
Loteria with Ms. Flores
In Ms. Flores' English Language Development (ELD) classes, students researched and found out more about the famous "Loteria" game that many of our latino students play. Students were able to practice their comprehension, writing, presentation, and more. All students were even shocked to find out that this game did not originate in Mexico but in Italy. Translations of the terms were done in English; students developed personal cards that represented their culture; students were given the opportunity to develop their own personalized game; and wrote a statements about why they picked what they did.

Pomegranate Packs a Punch
Pomegranates can help prevent or treat various disease risk factors including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, oxidative stress, hyperglycemia, and inflammatory activities with more antioxidant power than green tea. So enjoy this luscious fruit and do your body good.

Healing Food
After a wound or injury, the body requires more nutrients. Vitamin C is essential in tissue healing. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9405326/
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8930268/
Protein is also key; after injury, the body needs about 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram per day (for a 150-pound person, that's about 102 grams of protein per day). One breast of chicken is about 32 grams. Tuna is almost pure protein with about 25g. A can of garbanzo beans is about 21 grams. Peanut butter is about 8 grams. So, skip the sugary soda and empty carbs and choose citrus fruit and protein to heal.
Wow! Beans
Did you know that a ½ cup of beans has 25 grams of protein. Beans contain vitamin C and seven out of the eight B-vitamins--thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, biotin, and folate—but not vitamin B-12, which is primarily found in meat and animal protein sources. Calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, copper, manganese, selenium, iron, zinc, and potassium further support the high-quality nutritional profile of beans. The average adult male intake of legumes (beans and peas) is recommended in the range of 2 to 2.5 c-eq/wk, with female adults at 1.5 c-eq/wk. Beans keep grocery costs down, keep your weight down, glucose down, cholesterol down and your gut health up. Make beans part of your new year resolution and an inexpensive gut health solution. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7915747/
