As our membership year draws to a close, it's a meaningful time to reflect on how far we’ve come—and where we’re headed. While our roots run deep, the Skating Club of Houston was officially established in 2009 by past presidents Russel Howell and Virginia Talbot, grounded in a vision of community, excellence, and opportunity. We’re proud that founding board member Paula Moore continues to serve today, bridging our beginnings with our future.

When Jane Cardnall became President in 2019, she carried that founding vision forward with passion and clarity. Under her leadership, we expanded support for skaters through recognition programs, athlete stipends, and impactful community events—and we aim to continue building on that vision by growing our support and programs for skaters. Each year brings new opportunities, and we remain committed to evolving with the needs of our community.

Thanks to the dedication and foresight of past presidents and board members, our club is stronger than ever. Their leadership helped us navigate challenges and positioned us for lasting success.

From 148 members in our early days to 377 skaters across three rinks—The Aerodrome, Bellerive, and The Galleria—our growth reflects the strength of our shared mission and the vibrancy of our community. We hope to have another record breaking year while staying true to the strong foundation we've built.

And we can only do that with you—our dedicated members—continuing to stay involved and engaged!

Mark Peavy has stepped down from the Board of Directors after two and a half years of dedicated service, due to increasing personal commitments. During his time on the Board, Mark was instrumental in expanding test sessions and introducing virtual offerings, greatly enhancing our ability to serve members. He will be missed, and we sincerely thank him for his contributions and wish him all the best.

The Board of Directors has appointed Karen Peterson to complete Mark Peavy’s term, which runs through December 2025. Karen has worked closely with Mark as Test Chair over the past several months and has been a dedicated volunteer since joining our club over a year ago. She brings extensive experience, including having served in multiple roles—most notably as President of the Brazos Valley Figure Skating Club. With Karen stepping into the Vice President of Testing role, we are excited to announce that Kristen Belcourt has accepted the appointed position of Test Chair. A member of The Skating Club of Houston since 2020, Kristen has served as a USFS judge and referee, worked closely with our competition committee, and played a key role in the Houston Invitational Competition.

Supporting Karen and Kristen are several long-time and invaluable volunteers:

• Paula Moore, our Treasurer and a long-time USFS competition and test judge

• Megan Jones, a dedicated volunteer for our test sessions

• Angela McClendon, our Hospitality Chair

• Rachel Schramm, our beloved announcer

We are incredibly grateful to these ladies for their continued commitment and the countless hours they give to ensure our test sessions run smoothly.

All members must renew by June 30, 2025.

You will not be able to compete or test after July 1, 2025, unless your membership has been renewed.

Are you 1 or a group of skater moms/dads that has ever thought, "why don't we have...." or "our club should...." Well those ideas and events all happen with YOU! If you would like to organize/coordinate/set up a club party/ice/meeting/event, then approach a board member with your idea!! We would love to hear it! We can't do it all and need help! We are also starting to keep on the look out for that NEXT Generation of skater parents that want to be involved!!
